Hi Ya'll,
I was a member on the old forum for a while before it moved. Getting back into it now that I have a job again.
I'm going to pick up a used PSD X in the short to mid future. Just curious what you guys think about that.
I'll be in the market for one with about 100K miles on it - because thats what budget allows. I'm concerned because my experience with ford products has been that they are very tired at 100K miles. I'm on my 9th ford car and though this one (a Lincoln) is a little better, its not much better.
How do the Xs fair at 100 K miles? Just getting broke it? Major headaches?
I don't mind minor maintenance - water pumps, alternators, etc, but I don't want to have to do thousands of dollars in maintenance to keep in on the road what with having just purchased it.
It will split time as a people hauler when I'm out with family and towing our race car (about 4500lbs car+ trailer). I anticipate about 25K miles/year and would like to get 4-5 years out of it reliably.
Opinions?

Scott
how much are you looking to spend? I think an X with 100k and good service records would be ok.

Scott,
I'm not sure what year or engine you're considering in the X but mine is closing in on 90,000 miles and I've owned it since it was new. Aside from original problems that these vehicles have from the factory (brake rotors are very sensitive to proper lug-nut torquing, OEM shocks are not the best, needs a rear sway bar to handle nicely), I have no complaints. My transmission just did fail at about 87,000 miles so that's about the only thing I would caution you on is that if the 100K Excursion you're looking at hasn't already had its transmission rebuilt/whatever, plan on it in the near future. Personally, I've never owned a Ford truck that had an automatic transmission last beyond 90,000 miles.
Otherwise, the interior remains solid compared to previous Ford trucks I've owned...far less squeaks and rattles. Although it's not like it was when new, it certainly is the best Ford truck I've owned to date.
So the big questions to you are: 4x4? V8/V10/PSD? Transmission status (rebuilt or still stock)?
