My transmission died last week and even though I've always brought my Excursion to Ford for 5K maintenance, repairs, bought it brand new from them in August 2000, and bought the extended service plan with the best coverage, it still wasn't enough to get me warranty repair work on my transmission that died after roughly 87,500 miles. The warranty work was denied because I have a chip installed.
Let this be a lesson to anybody bringing their vehicle in for service -- remove your chip if you're having work done on any major "powertrain" (engine or trans) component. Ford doesn't care about your service history, your side of the story, or anything, they will flat out not perform warranty work.
I'm extremely disappointed at this outcome as it is the first major failure on my Excursion and the first time I've truly had the opportunity to use my extended service plan coverage. Upon finding out the work not being covered, I proceeded to ask for a refund on the ESP. It is worth a whopping $200 with the remaining mileage.
What aggravates me the most is if I had removed the chip beforehand, this would be a non-issue because a Ford trans failing at just under 90K is not something to think twice about.
Ford wants something to the tune of $3,000 for a rebuilt trans and labor to install it. I will be working through gearman for a replacement and doing the install myself most likely.

Eric,
Sorry to hear the bad news. Ford looks for reasons not to do warranty work, is the reason I didn't purchase the extended plan. I learned this on my '93 Cobra. Unless the owner plans to keep the truck stock, I wouldn't recommend the extended plan. |

My guess is this, $1500.00 total. Done and installed by you.
$1150.00 for rebuild or exchange.
$300.00 Hughes converter
$50.00 fluid, rags and beer

Jared
i think your pricing is off. you cant buy a good converter for 300.00. i think list price on a Ford rebuilt is around 260.00. that is the best stock converter made, bar none. now lets look at prices.
my cost on rebuild kit is 90.00.(containes gaskets ,clutches-no steel plates-rings and seals)steel plate kit costs 60.00. now we need solenoid block(125.00) cost. neutral switch(MLPS) 62.00. the input shell(always bad, needs hardened one(35.00). forward planet and ring gear(always bad) 145.00. center support(bad 50% of time) 48.00. pump is not always bad, but 226.00. main shaft goes bad when case bushing wears(used if you can find it 75.00) update 2k and 2k1 second gear sprag(Ford tried a diode, big mistake)125.00.filter(good ones are 14.00) TransGo small shift kit only available to trans shops 32.00.(thats a must. there can be other hard parts bad, but this is a typical example. these are my cost people. nobody buys cheaper than my shop.
i posted this so all you good people have an idea why you pay so much. i didnt post labor(it varies) our local and state gov. kill us with regulations and taxes. we are hunted game. sorry for the rant.
now, Jared tell me where you are going to buy a 1500.00 trans and converter that is worth (i want to say some bad words) a darn?

Just moved into a new house -- garage is filled with boxes and my tools are scattered. No time to do the trans install myself. I would do it if it was my Galaxie but the X is the daily driver and it is really painful having the daily driver on the disabled list.
Ford's pricing is as follows:
Ford's cost on the remanufactured trans: $1800
What they sell it for: $2200
Ford's cost on the new cooler: $70
What they sell it for: $140
Labor: $80/hr
Total:
$2200 - trans w/ 3year/36k warranty
$620 - (7.75 hrs X $80)
$180 - Fluid/misc parts/etc
--------
$3,000
As long as this trans goes for another 90,000 miles I'll be happy. Sure wish they lasted longer, though. I'm pulling the chip on my truck if I ever bring it in for engine/trans service again.

Eric, just make sure that your chip doesn't leave a code for the Ford techs. I have read that sometimes, even though you've pulled the chip, they can tell.
No firsthand experience in this, however.

BUMM - ER !!!
Man, isn't timing EVERYTHING ???? I know how the "spread all over is" We sold our house and am renting a smaller one while building and it is a MESS !!! I've actually given up and just go buy another of what I KNOW I have out there somewhere when I can't find it !
Hope you can get your truck back together quickly....
Would a visit to another dealer possbibly help?
I know, they've already noted it in their system, but it may be worth a tow...
You might also call the chip manufacturer -
This is the perfect test for their claims about protection with the Magnumm-Moss act for aftermarket parts...
They've ALL told me that if the aftermarket part can't be PROVEN to have caused the failure then your warranty claim can't be denied !!!
But that will be a long drawn out thing... maybe get together with others in this situation to see if you can do anything with it????
Good luck and thanks for the heads up...
I think I'll call Ford today and get my money back on my 100K warranty...
