We are in the process of selling our 2001 Excursion.. buyer drove it and came back telling me that the four wheel drive isn't working right and that the fluid needs to be changed. Took it into a FORD service shop and they did just that. They then told me it would take 3000-5000 miles for the fluid to work...2nd potential buyer drove it, and came back tonight and said my entire rear axle is "cooked" were the words he used! So, what do I do now...he said when he put it in 4 wheel drive it just jumped and shakes all over the place. I am so upset at the dealership that I took it to last week. So where do I go from here...I need some feedback from anyone who has had this problem. Thank you Email address is [email protected] Thanks Michelle |

Michelle
have you experienced any of these problems ? have you tried the 4x4 to see if it works. what did the Ford dealer say ? if the rear diff. is toast, i would expect that you are hearing big noises and your trans not shifting properly (metel from diff. sticks to magnet on speed sensor and causes bad signal to computer). maybe you should have your dealer do a complete diagnostic and then you should have some hard facts.

If you're having trouble with the rearend, it would be felt in 2wd or 4wd, not just 4wd. If your problems are only happening with 4x4 engaged, I would look more towards what's happening with the front differential. The front drivetrain is only activated when you're in 4x4. The problem most likely resides in the transfer case and the gears associated with activating the front driveline or the front differential itself.
The best thing to do is test it for yourself in 4x4, if it shudders or anything out of the ordinary, bring it into the dealer to have them look at the transfer case again as well as have them take a look at the front end.

Micelle,
Make sure they're not trying to use the 4WD on dry pavement. Now, I don't know anything about the nature of the X's 4WD but I know that most vehicles will exhibit the jumps and shakes because of the front wheels binding. When turning a corner, the tires will try to turn the same speed with the hubs locked. Not good for the system. Also, like Mr. long said, there is no difference in the rear-end between 2WD and 4WD unless your full-floater has manual hubs and a fully-locking differential.
HTH!

I ALWAYS go with the potential buyers to see what type of abuse they are putting your truck through !!!
I've had one that started to trash my car and I told him pull over and I'll drive it for him...
Het, I drive HARD, but I don't break things !
Be safe and leave their drivers license at YOUR house and tell someone where you are going...
And I might come test drive it in BEAUTIFUL Denver !!! Have some friends that live in one of the Eastern suburbs - went to visit them and ALMOST didn't leave - MY goodness it's nice there !!!
Rode south along the mountains - and saw ALL the great spots !!! Even white water rafting,,, royal gorge - all stunning !!!
Of course, I'm from the DFW area, so ANYTHING is pretty....

If you put a LSD 4x4 in 4WD on blacktop it will jerk and hop all over the place. This is not only normal but GOOD! It means the diffs are locking and forcing the wheels to turn. It feels weird, but when you get into snow or sand this is what you want. |

Unless you custom ordered it with an LS. Front wheels dont bind in 4x4 even with a limited slip. The rear end is toast, means the Limited slip has died. Most likely because someone put mismatched rear tires on there for a bit and cooked the limited slip. Probably didnt have a full size spare. Or someone didnt put the stanky ford additive in the diff. |
