OK here is my problem, while accelerating and the transmission is shifting through the gears I noticed the final gear just prior to overdrive shifts but only drops about 100 RPM ( or possibly it tries to shift and returns to the previous gear). All the other gears seam to drop about 3-400 RPM between shifts. When the transmission does shift into overdrive it is about a 8-900 RPM drop. It just seems to me like my transmission is skipping a gear. My X has 49000 miles and has never had any trans work done. I was about to take it in for a fluid change, however I would like to know do I have a problem?

what kind of fluid change should I get(drop the pan or a complete flush)?
what kind of questions do I ask to find a quality transmission shop?

any help is appreciated.

I believe this is a question to be answered by gearman!!! He will be able to tell you how to proceed.

BTW, welcome to the site.

I do believe that you are witnessing not a shift between gears but perhaps the lockup engaging? When my lockup engages it's a very small difference in RPM. Just my .02

Gearman?

I defer to gearman as THE man, but this sounds just like converter lockup to me. My X does the same, and in my other vehicles that have lockups - '87 Volvo 745, '99 Suburban - they act exactly the same. The drop in the Volvo was most noticable, but was only a couple of hundred RPM.
Mike, what do you think?

First of all, how long have you owned this truck? Mikie is right on with what i was thinking. how long has it done this? is there a flashing o/d light? check engine light? have you had it scanned? these transmissions almost always set a code when something is wrong, even if no flashing light. first thing i would do is get a scan( i hope all you good people invest in a scan tool for your trucks) less than $200.00. second thing i would do is have a new MLPS installed(Manual Lever Position Sensor, used to be called a nuetral safety switch). these buggers will play havoc on transmission performance without setting codes. third, i would replace speed sensor on top of differential housing.(one bolt, two wire connector, piece of cake to replace) diagnosing at long distance is tough, we need all the info no matter how trivial to try and help. i am always available at my shop 310 674 4400. i will be happy to help and i dont charge for this

Thanks for the replys everyone. I will have to get my X description put in so it comes up every time I post. I have a 2000 X LTD 4X4 V10 with no MODS yet, but I am going to start soon with the rear stabilizer and go through the whole X. My wish list ,trans shift kit, the best rotors and pads I can find, some high quality shocks and some michelins when these crap tires give out.
As for my transmission the o/d light is not flashing and there is no check engine lights. I have not had it scanned , but I will. I have owned the truck one year and bought it with 35,000 miles. The previous owner did not tow anything and never had the trans serviced. I don't know how long it has been acting this way, I just never paid attention.

Thanks again

Next time count the number of times it "shifts" and which one is the one that you suspect to be acting up. That may exaplain exactly what it is, and I'm guessing TC lockup as well. It can feel like a "shift". Well at least until you get teh shift kit in then you should KNOW when it's actually shifting.

update on my transmission, had it scanned and there was no codes. The small rpm change was the torque converter. I decided to wait on the fluid change until the shift kit is installed. The transmission shop said everything is working fine and the fluid change could wait. Now it is time to talk to "gearman" and see what I need.
