I'm just curious of other peoples thoughts on this....

I try to impress upon my wife they she needs to turn of the A/C when shuts the vehicle off. I don't have to say anything to her anymore because it's now automatic for her to do so.

My thinking is, if you leave it on, then when you're starting the vehicle you're putting a lot of undue stress on the starter motor.

Am I just being silly here? Am I the only one who does this?

TIA

No you're not the only one. We turn off ac, the radio, and set the parking brake. I don't like the stress put on the tranny if it rocks backwards or forwards.

Don't worry...you aren't alone.

i also shut the air off because my thinking is that its putting too much stress on the batterys along with the starter. you guys are pretty sharp

Along those same lines, if I park with the front tires against a bump-stop or curb, I always put the tranny in neutral to roll back off thinking they put too much stress on the tires, bearings, etc... Just weird that way, I guess.

Ditto, all of the above

Also, if you turn the AC off but leave the fan on for a couple minutes before turning it off, you can get the cold air out of the vents and reduce the chance for condensation build up, thus that musty smell in the AC when you turn it on.

I've got ECC so I just hit "vent" for a couple minutes before stopping, and shut it off completly before shutting the truck down.

I agree with Jim. We also turn off the air to get the condensation blown off the evaporator. Hopefully it will help keep the drains from getting plugged up with mildew and help keep that musty smell from forming.
As to starting, as far as I know, there is a cut-out in all vehicles that disengages the a/c compressor when starting up. It won't engage until the engine has started. Don't know how many seconds the delay is, but I've never found a problem with any car I've owned having the a/c turned on when starting.

I'd like to expand on Kevins topic a little if I may. I installed an remote starter for my wife thinking it would make her life a little easier. She can just hit the starter and a few minutes later, get into a cool or warm vehicle . The only problem is that I was always taught to shut everything off before turning off the engine due to the loads. I've been seeking some professional advice locally but nobody seems to be able to give me a solid answer or explanation. Any information is greatly appreciated.

The remote starter does through a large variable in there...
but on a big black diesel Excursion in the texas heat there's NO QUESTION the rule is turn both front and rear air on high and on automatic to allow it too cool before we get back in...

Typically I leave one of the rear windws cracked a bit too to allow the superheated air to escape...

Butm my wife's black LS is parked in an open parking lot all day while she is at work...
this is a real predicament for her without remote start...
I've suggested she not only crack a window, but also put the ait on outside vent instead of recirculate so that the temp does rise TOO high...

Was that in Phoenix I heard about windshields popping out because of the closed up cars ????

One thing I recently learned is that leaving the vehicle parked on the max a/c setting leaves the the fresh air intake vents closed so the system cannot breath at all and traps condensation and becomes a definite mold and meldew trap even in the desert. So, with a remote starter it is a good idea to set the a/c to the normal or non-recirculate mode to allow some of the condensation to evaporate out the system's fresh air vents. (I realize that fresh air is a misnomer often times and really we are talking about outside air)

Put your AC on high the next time you start your Excursion. When you turn the ignition to the start position, it temporarily turns off the fan & a/c. The radio also shuts off, too. Once the key goes back to the "run" position, your accessories turn back on. I always leave the heat or a/c on depending on the time of year because I use remote start (daily in the winter time) so I can come out to a comfortable vehicle.

On a side note, I always keep the headlights off before starting to reduce on the draw on the batteries...particularly in the winter time when the diesel requires full juice of the two batteries to start!!
