I was surfing over at Diesel Innovations and came across their "High Pressure Oil Rail Crossover Hose" kit. From their web site description:
"This hose is used to bridge the 2 high pressure oil rails in the heads that feed the injectors. The installation of this hose will typically smooth out rough idles as the ICP can now sense the pressure in both heads, quiet the engine, as well as provide improved oil flow to the injectors."
The kit costs $45.00 and installed easily in about 10 minutes. The kit includes two plugs that they include to close off the ports in case the hose splits/leaks (disabling the engine--kind of an emergency thing).
There was a definite reduction in the engine rattle at idle. Above idle, I didn't notice any change (too much noise from the engine to tell, I think).
I think it was one of the best mods I've done. No more annoying rattle at stop lights or while fueling. I didn't quantify the noise reduction, but it more than subtle--even my wife asked what had changed.
Could you duplicate the kit for less at NAPA? Probably. But I think the extra $10 or so that you're paying for the assembled kit is worth the convenience of having someone else engineer it.
Worth the $45, I think.

Scott,
I have to "argue" with you on the BEST mod for the 7.3L's....
MY order is:
1) Hellwig rear sway bar
2) Microtuner
3) Oil rail connect
... kidding, of course,
but the oil rail connect did not benefit me as much as I would have liked....
I think I got a sub standard kit... because while it DID quiet the 7.3L and seemed to smooth out the power, until I took it on my first trip after the install...
on the way back home from the trip, I noticed a fog on my back window... it WAS raining, but the washer and wiper would not clear it....
Stopped at the next fuel stop and realized it was OIL !!!!
The o-rings were bad with my kit and I lost 4 quarts on the way home !
I did try to tighten it as much as possible, but kept leaking... don't know if it vigrated loose or the o-rings just kept compressing...
WHAT A MESS !!! The whole bottom and back of my Ex was BLACK !!!
I pulled it when I got home and it's still in my garage....

Any chance you left one of the old o-rings in the seat? That would guarantee a leak. I haven't leaked a drop in 5k miles. Any leaks since?
Hmmm...Best mods...
I have a long list of "favorites". The Sylvania SilverStar bulbs and longer wiper blades (rainy So. Florida) are at the top of my list. The Helwig was OK, but not as noticeable for us in South Florida where our high speed turn excitement is on the off-ramp. Made a difference, but not at the top of my list.
I agree that the SCMT is a must. I really don't like SuperChips (long, previously posted, story) but they do offer (IMHO) the best tuner. The Diablo 110HP Revolution chip trashed my trans (thanks Gearman for helping me battle the dealer with some informed buzzwords). Gonna list it on eBay (actually I have two to sell).
My newly installed locomotive horn (yup, a Nathan P3 from a GE commuter locomotive) is at the top of *this* week's list. Too loud to blow at the house. I did *salute* a passing train engineer today and he gave me a big smile and a thumbs up. At least somebody appreciates it ;-)
More on the horn and some pics later.

Hmm...
Maybe THAT's what it was... another oring.... oh well... DOn't have the 7.3L any longer... will put the oil rail connect in the pile with all the other stuff from the old X !!!
Putting that thing on was a test the first time I did it... but I would think it would be 15 minutes now that I know how to do it...
but BOY was it hard to lay across that engine trying to figure it out the first time!!!

why this love affair with SCMT? what did it do for you? i am not knocking you or them, but i must know. i tried it in my X and am not impressed. i have all these things available to me from TTS. every tuner buys everyone elses product to see how good it is. i am lucky to have this available to me. (they say its who you know and not what you know)lol

Re the SCMT:
Positives:
1. It is easy to install and well engineered.
2. No mods necessary to the EEC as with chips (thus voiding the warranty).
3. Clears SES light quickly and easily, clears/reads DTC codes.
4. Works as advertised.
5. Can remove the programming leaving the EEC in "factory" status--again, no voided warranty.
6. Only $300 versus up to $600 for other types of units.
Negatives:
In my iopinion (based on MY personal experience--see my other posts re the SCMT) the company and its Vice President are dishonest, vengeful, and difficult to work with.

Ease of use and "resale-ability"
wamted an external solution like a programmer rather than an 'chip'...
At the time I got mine - they were the 'best' alternative for my needs...
(Probably will never buy another supership product... but at the tiime it fit the bill)
And I concur -
even though I liked the product - the company was less than stellar in the customer support and service area !

John,
Around here we call that a quality underbody coating. Why go somewhere and pay when you can get it done for free. "Ya'll" down there in Texas don't know about the salt they put on the roads here in the winter time...it can wreak havoc on your vehicle's underbody. Thank God for oil leaks every now and then!

Funny !!! I can see the 'undercoating'
And that's right, "Hoss" !!!
We hare in 'Texus' don't need no salt, nor do we WANT it
(Except when you send those freak ice storms and we go skating across the overpasses !)
Besides, those darn tumbleweeds and Armadillos keep getting stuck under there !
take care!
