I STILL can't believe the 6 speed manual isn't offered in the X. I woulda' ordered it in a heartbeat!!
The auto is OK BUT, the 45mph lockup or shift point is too low. I actually hate driving around town because the syruppy slushy lockup always happens at the wrong time. It CAN'T healthy for the tranny long-term. I have tried turning the OD button off but if you cycle it on/off a few times in an hour, then it starts flashing!! (happened twice). If the lockup point was 50 or 55 the whole imprecise, hunting torture would be eliminated.
So: 1. Is it shift kit time or can it be reprogrammed??? 2. What effect does the torque converter update have?
3. What is this "diode" part in the tranny?
4. Gearman- 'yer posts are super- what do you drink??
Ciao, Godfather
BIG QUESTION: Whats the best REPEATABLE MPG you boys can get?? I never break 19 on my 2002 7.3 4wd X Limited.
How the hell did an EXCURSION get sold to poor SARI in Norway???? Talk about a rarity!! |

The trans is computer controlled so any change in shift ponts will have to be done by programing. I think the shift points should stay where they are at and you do want lock up coming in when it does to keep the trans cooler. I think your X is lugging because you dont have the power to pull 4th gear and lock up at low speeds. I recommend a TTS 3 stage chip with a converter and Transgo shift kit. Your X will no longer lug and your trans will no longer hunt gears. You can do the chip alone ( i always leave mine in the tow mode=50horsepower) and i love it. I rarely use the 100 horsepower mode. You will eventually have to modify trans. You also mention that using your O/D cancel button a few times and your O/d light starts flashing; get it checked. You can use that button as much as you want and should not have a problem. Get it scanned.

gearman, I have the same problem however; i have a v-10 can i also use that chip you recommend a lot of times my motor will kind of bog when the trans shifts into 4th especially up a hill and i have to hit the od button i try to only turn off the od at low speeds because im not sure if shifting od off at high speeds will screw up the tranny. |

Steve
Gas engines do not respond to chips like the diesel. I would look into a gear change at the diff. That would make the biggest power difference (beat bang for the buck).

Gearman: nice to see you are being commended for the ol' post count! Who woulda thunk???
Greg: Your OD light should never flash like that -- something's wrong. I can use mine all day long and never run into an issue like that.
Best MPG 19.5
Average MPG: 17.5
Normal highway mileage: 18-18.5
About to start dropping as we begin moving to winterized diesel here in MN...

mike | THANKS GEARMAN!! I'll have to get some literature from you OR drive to California to have you OH MASTER, do my tranny and meet your new governator!!!
What is this diode thing you're talking about??
If my tranny wouldn't shift to lockup till 50 instead of 45 in town driving would be much more tolerable.
Can I add a spin on PH8A typical Ford oil filter to the cooler lines to filter out the tranny fluid better??? The new 6.0 PSD trannies have a spin on filter which is a great idea. I'd like to add it to my 7.3- have you ever heard of this working OK?
You definitely have a future customer!!!
