I see that there are many people here who have said that they have had to replace their tranny on the 7.3L PS Diesel, is this a common problem and at what mileage does this usually happen. Plus under what circumstances does this happen, One guy has said that this happened due to his chip and ford would not honour the warranty but when this happened his X was allready passed 85,000 miles. This leads me to ask what is the warranty in Canada it is 3yrs 60,000km or 36,000miles pretty lame I think especially when Dodge has 7yr 115,000KM or 69,000miles. I am looking right now at a 2000 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel with 65,000miles on it and I will be taking it to Ford to get it looked over before I buy it but is there anything else that people can let me in on that I may have to worry about or make sure has been fixed?? I really do not want to buy a new one since the value drops so fast I do not see the logic especially when this is my work truck. any who cheers and thanks for the help hope to get an answer soon. Ciao |

We dont know what your X has been through in the past. Having a Ford dealer check it out will only tell you a few things. As far as the transmission goes, knock off enough money to pay for a transmission rebuild. You may be on borrowed time, maybe not. You can have the pan dropped and see if there is metal stuck on the magnet at bottom of pan (usually tells you torque converter is going bad). You can cut the filter open and see if there is clutch material in it. None of these things are for sure, so, go for the discount price because of mileage on trans.

Gearman,
Is there something that can be done to the trans so that when you place the truck in park it doesn't rock/roll when you let off of the brake? Doesn't roll a lot but I notice every little thing when it comes to this truck... Would having a Ford dealer check the trans be good or would it be better to go to a trans shop?
Thanks in advance

The movement you notice in your X or any truck that has 4 wheel drive is normal. The problem is all that geartrain underneath (2 differentials , transfer case, and 2 drive shafts. Your trans park mechanism is locking fine, but you have so many components that will slightly move before they react to the park lock, you will get some rocking before it settles. As far as checking your transmission, i dont recommend a Ford dealer unless you know one well and have faith in their techs. Look for an independant trans shop with a good reputation that has a lot of experience with trucks. (sometimes hard to find). Find out how long they have been in business, is the shop clean? Can they explain technical things so that you can understand them? It's your money, you deserve to know exactly why you have to spend it. If you dont get the answers youwant, look elsewhere.

Amen to that, do alot of research. I had just replaced my Tranny and Torque converter with Suncoast products which are known in the industry to be top knotch and was discovering my Western Diesel chip had been causing some erratic behavior with my shifting. So I removed the chip and proceeded to take the X to the dealer to have them verify the software in my computer wasnt corrupt. Well they took it upon themselves to test ride the truck and wrote me a laundry list of "driveability" problems and then wanted to charge me an 1 1/2 hours of labor for their diagnosis when the only thing that was ever asked of them was to make sure my software version was up to snuff. Their factory trained Ford techs were a joke in their tranny diagnosis and refused to believe the tranny was in good operating order. So get multiple opinions and find someone who actually knows what they are talking about.

Thanks guys,
No problems so far with the trans but nothing is as bulletproof as we would like...
Side note; where is a good location to go to see what TSB's have been posted on the year truck you have? Since I brought this ride used (barely) would like to know what may need to get replaced/updated/fixed if it is "free"....

It's your money, you deserve to know exactly why you have to spend it. If you dont get the answers youwant, look elsewhere. | Boy, do I second that thought of Geardude's! Had one tranny in my '92 Burb rebuilt after it turned out to be a GM reman Olds tranny that the **&!!#& I bought it from had bolted in to replace the Burb tranny he wrecked. Despite a pretty thourough looking over, my mechanic missed that.
Later, that rebuild failed - cracked input shaft from too high line pressures and hard shifting while towing my camper - and we were in the process of moving, so I had to take it ot another shop. Some of the locals said bad things about these folks, so I asked a LOT of questions and took a GOOD look at their shop.
The builder REALLY knew his stuff - we talked to him for about an hour - and you could eat off the floor in the shop. When we went to pick up the truck he said that he refused to rebuild my old one again. Too many folks had done too much to it in the past. Instead, he built me a practically new one out of good parts he had in the shop. It was perfect and never gave me another hiccup for a few years afterwards until I traded it on the X. These folks weren't cheap, but they were honest and VERY good. When the motor on the same Burb went, we let them do the swap on that too. We're still friends with the manager of that place.
So keep up the good work Mike. Us guys who like to actually use our X's need you!!
Gary

It's no wonder they think it was shifting bad...anything not OEM is just so frowned upon. I sure wish there was a dealership out there that dealt with new vehicles, warranties, and was savvy with the automotive aftermarket.
Like others have mentioned about paying a premium price...that doesn't bother me as long as I get the perceived value out of it -- quality work and no hassles. I just want to enjoy my vehicle as a daily/weekend/vacation/cruising machine. Is that so much to ask?
With regards to finding a trans shop...I would recommend finding someone that is familiar with Ford transmissions. I had a guy work on my X locally who was an excellent trans guy, clean shop, nice, etc. etc. but he was really Chevy/Dodge and hadn't done much work with Fords. Granted, the same concepts apply to all trannies but there are always the idiosyncrasies that go along with anything that a true professional will be able to deal with the 1st time rather than learning on the job. My $0.02.
