I have a 2002 X. I am getting confliting information and want to know how I can find out for sure what front and rear I have. I was told I have a Dana 60 Rear, and the Front is a Dana 50. I also have a F350 from the outside the Fronts look the same. I forgot to check the rear to see if they looked the same. Is there anyway to find out for sure?

I would have to have someone confirm this but I believe the rear is a Sterling 10.5 int he Ex and the rear in the F350 is a Dana 60. Dunno 'bout the front. My F250 and Ex were/are 4x2.

The frontend of your Excursion is a dana 50 and the rearend of your Excursion is a Sterling 10.5. I don't know for sure what the F350's have.

Does anyone know how a Sterling 10.5" compares to a Dana 60 or Dana 50?

You can determine what is "supposed" to be on your truck by looking at the vehicle information tag in your driver-side door jamb. The factory service manual deciphers all of those codes. But beware! My info-tag was NOT in agreement with what was on the truck. You may have to actually read the codes right off the tags attached to the axle housings to determine what you have. While the factory service manual is a darn good source of info, I do not trust it blindly because of a few errors I have found in it.

When I built a set of radius-rods for a coworker's F350 dually, the first thing I noticed was it's rear axle tube diameter was 4" versus 3-1/2" diameter on the rear of my X. Sorry, I did not get any info off his F350's info-tag. And another sorry, I do not intend to build anymore radius-rods for F350s ... just keep making them for Excursions having 3-1/2" diameter rear axle housings/tubes.

Unless you get the information directly off of your equipment, do not trust what anybody says about what you're "supposed" to have. The factory can't even keep this stuff straight. Find out for yourself. Read the info on the axles, then look it up in the manual or call a Ford parts counter to make positive identification.

Jus' my 2-cents .... and change (excuse me for rambling)

Yeah, the 10.25 is a full floater. BIG, serious, heavy duty axle. D60 is a nice axle too, especially for a front axle, but if the two were in a fight the 10.25 would win.

FYI: They use a Dana 80 in the F350 Dually.... Thats why the axle tube is larger.....

10.25 is comparable in strength to a Dana 70 or GM 14-bolt, and all are stronger than a Dana 60. Not that the D60 isn't a pretty stout axle, it is just not as stout as those 3.

Just for one more clarification...

Ex's F250s of 2002 vintage wear a Dan 50 up front and a Sterling 10.50 out back.

Duallies have a Dana 60 up front and a Dana 80 out back.

All fronts were changed over to Dana 60s for the whole line in 2003.

Dana 50s have a necked down axle shaft and a lower spline count versus the Dana 60.
