This sudden failure is very dangerous, If you turn in front of oncoming traffic and the engine won't go over idle you better hope you have enough time to "idle" out of the way!!!!
The worst part is this is an electric pedal (I don't know if it's encoder or rheostat) so when it dies there's no "horses ass" roadside jury rig to at least let you get to the dealer. I was gonna' try to hook up a volume control pot but didn't know how to wire it in for the ride. I shoulda taken my old slot car speed control and wired that in-LOL, LOL !!!
Unlike the mechanical injection in my 81 VW baby diesel, you can't put a nut under the idle screw and motor home.
My local dealer Bev Smith Ford did the job in 45 minutes and all is now OK. Take your truck there for service- they have great coffee and donuts in the waiting room and the girls in the cashier area are absolute foxes!!!
The parts department is actually doing the Harley Davidson boutique look with hats, shirts and car models- a big surprise.
This was a very impressive visit BUT, unfortunately, typical bullsh*t ruins the whole thing!! The check engine light came on when the pedal died so I asked them to read or at least give me the codes to verify the pedal caused it.
GUESS WHAT- I'm told "Ford only allows us 15 minutes labor for pedal R&R so there's not enough time to check the codes!!! This THE STUPIDEST thing I've heard in awhile!! They should gladly read the codes because:

1. This is a 50 thousand dollar, top-of-the-line vehicle and regardless of what vehicle it is,
after a recall where the problem could get you killed/injured, shouldn't they at least verify that
the light came on due to the problem????? Leaving the dealer with the light still glowing does
nothing to restore your confidence.
2. The check engine light is an excuse for the dealer to "print money"!!! They should scan
every car that comes in!!! My X has 90k on original everything!! I guess the advisor
figured I do my own work (Harley shirt, etc) BUT, he didn't even try to sell me any service!!
3. Watch out- the new pedal assy is MUCH easier to push!! I almost did a burn out when I left!!

I stilll can't believe they wouldn't scan the codes. BTW- you guys saved me $125.00 because I was gonna' buy/replce the pedal myself BUT thanks to Eric Long, I found out about the recall/TSB!!! The recall is not mileage or original owner so, everyone qualifies.
I recommend all of you bring your x in now and get the pedal changed!! I bet a lot of the "ghost'" check engine light posts are caused by the pedal assembly. From what I've read it not only has the speed control but a couple of switches are part of the assembly and can cause errors too.
Do any of you guys ever get a surge at the lower end of the RPM range just off idle?? I've heard this in conversation but have never seen a post here. Does your X do it?

Ford has issued a customer satisfaction program (03B03) for 2002 and 2003 SuperDuty And Excursion vehicles equipped with 7.3L diesel engines. The bulletin calls for the replacement of the adjustable accelerator pedal sensor.

The service will be in effect until 31 March 2004, regardless of vehicle mileage.

The vehicles involved were made at the Kentucky Truck Plant from JOB1 through 17 October 2002 and at the Cuautitlan Assembly Plant from JOB1 through 21 December 2001.

Should the sensor fail, the driver may experience an intermittent loss of acceleration, or the ability to increase engine RPM past idle when depressing the accelerator pedal.
