What is the last model year for the Excursion 2003 or 2004? From the reports I read it is 2004 does that mean all Excursions made in 2003 are considered the 2004 model year?
Any idea on the changes between 2003 and 2004 models?
The changes between the 2002 and 2003 model years are from what I have read are.
1. 6.0 Liter diesel and 5 spd transmission. That alone is a big major change. For me the transmission is even more important than the 6.0 liter diesel. I have a 2002 7.3 Liter now and the 4 spd auto is lethargic especially on entrance ramps on the highway. Heard it was the torque converter that is the major downfall. And that life expectancy of the trans behind all that torque of the 7.3 liter diesel is starved due to the pressures generated (or lack there of) from the transmission hydraulic pump.
the 5 spd trans was developed right along with the 6.0 Liter 32 valve diesel so they are mated to each other vs the 4 spd transmission which must accomodate the other two gasoline engines.
2. Read a in-house ford magazine stating that there are shock and bump stop revisions on the 2003 excursion. To allow for lower speed pot hole handling.
Hope this revision helps handling. Also something mentioned about a rear sway bar. I thought the 2002 model has one seems like they indicated them actually putting one on for the 2003 model year.
3. There is a grab handle on the pillar of the drivers side now as well.
that is it I think from remembering the magazine. |

Hi Rick, welcome to the site!
From what I understand is that the last model year of the Excursion will be the 2004's. What this means is the models coming out at the end of 2003 (considered 2004 models) will be it. So basically, after the 2003 model, there will be one more opportunity for major revisions to the Excursion. My guess is that the bugs will be ironed out of the new 6.0L Powerstroke and the 5-speed automatic transmission.
The rumor is that the "next" Excursion or whatever vehicle replaces it will be a longer wheelbase Expedition. Who knows if that's true or when/if it'll come out. I am still not sure why Ford is discontinuing the Excursion in its current form. There is just nothing else out there quite like it and they seem to be "stealing" a lot of buyers away from the competition for such a unique vehicle. I'm glad I have my 2000 and have no plans to get rid of it (ever)! 72,000 miles and still going strong...

Rick,
If it were me I'd wait for the 6.0L. It is having some major teething problems right now.
Continue to pursue diminished value, by all means!
I sure wouldn't look to trade your PROVEN PSD in for a new one just yet. Plus for about $2500-3000 bucks you can make that 4R100 absolutely bullet-proof or rather PSD proof! A BTS tranny gets rave reviews. Or you can talk to "gearman" here on the site. He is our local automagic tranny guru.

Ken;
Thanks for the input. Where are you tracking these issues? Should I wait for the 2004 Excursion then? My truck is fine. I just want to do all of the research I can on 2003 6.0 Liter issues.
Thanks

Rumor I heard is late feb or march next year is it. Then the longer expy will arrive a yr or so later. The 6.0 is having some problems right now, haven't heard anything bad about the tranny though. I would wait to the end of the yr for the 04's and the bug fixes. Look up Gearman as Monsta said or look up BTS tranny's

Wonder if the extended version of the expedition will have the diesel engine? Might not have it since i seem to recall that for any engine trans for a specific chassis has to under go alot of testing ie crash testing, fuel mileage testing before it can be approved by some goverment agency. With fords current state of affairs the diesel might not come with it during the first few production runs.

Gentlemen;
I am really taking what you have to say to heart!!! So you absolutey reccomend me not getting a 2003 6.0 liter diesel excursion? The dealer will be rcving one this week from the factory. Aren't the problems on the EARLY nov 2002 6.0 liter diesels? The software reflashes that are done means they are available to the dealer now and would that not mean they are updated from the factory by now? Most of the problems seem software issues.
My 2002 got blasted by an escalade and i hate pay on a truck that has had $6,000.00 of repairs on it with only 4500 miles on the odometer. All my ebay checks for completed bids on 2002 excursions models that are similar hardly if ever get $30,000.00 on the closing bid. The dealer is willing to give me $30,000.00 trade in value. The truck runs fine drives straight and the repair shop is reputable for as long as i own the vehicle. The damage that the escalade did was to the driver door and hit mainly on the front drivers side wheel. I just dont want a leaking windshield creaks in the dash assembly and the door rattling.
I was hoping to cash out while i still have equity in my truck for a new 6.0l. So i guess i have to weigh what could happen to a new truck with the 6.0 under warranty vs a cracked up vehicle that was repaired yet can still get half way descent trade in value. Cuz if i wait and go to sell it later that accident might show up on carfax or something. The dealer already knows about the accident. And I am getting the new truck for approx. $47,373.00 before taxes. If I go to sell my truck I could take a $10,000 hit on value on my truck at a later date. Carfax might not have me since this incident is fairly new 25 dec 2002.
I would appreciate your take since I am not even sure there will be a 2004 model year yet. Meaning they will stop making the trucks this year vs any at all in 2004.
I want to catch the tail end of production if possible.
thanks
