At what point do we switch from plug in & additive to running the truck all night? I read that Cummins recoomends it at -20 deg F but could not get an answer on the PS. I called Ford Fleet and they did not get back to me. Supposed to be -10 tonight. CCCCOOOOLLLLLLDDDD

Is it -10 on the thermometer?

Check on the back of the anti gel additive. Some go down as much as -30 if used double strength. It really doesn't matter if you run the truck all night due to the freezing of the fuel. The tank is in the rear of the truck where the cold has complete access. If you regularly get this cold and drive in it, it might be a recommendation to get a tank heater.

I have friends that built a canopy around the base of the trucks and used a propane heater on low to keep the tanks warm on really cols nights. Although a great idea I saw him broke down just the other day and fuel did gell 3 hours on a job where he didn't keep the tank warm and the fuel geled in the fuel lines.

By the way, the best anti gel for the money is Diesel Kleen (white bottle) found at Walmart. Next fuel fill dump a 32 oz bottle in the 44 gal tank and you'll be good down to -25 degress and the additive will enhance better starting. From then just 16 oz for 40 gallons.

-25 last night with a -47 to -49 windchill on Upper Red Lake in northern Minnesota. Truck sat from 4pm to 8am. Plugged in off generator at 8am. tried to start at 9 nothing. plugged in 50 amp battery charger for an hour, nothing. Placed a Mr. Heater brand heater under the oil pan for an hour no luck. Finally a fellow ice fisherman jumped started my truck! Was running more #2 fuel than #1 at the time, no gell up. At least my father and I caught 15 crappies. Smallest one pound largest 1lb 15 oz!

A guy on the lake told me that in Mora MN the #2 fuel had the winter additive in it. Never heard of this before. I would find it hard to believe the stations up there could even sell straight number 2 in the middle of winter. -30 is common up there!

I've heard of that when fuel distributers have an abundace of #2 fuel on hand.
They order the anti gel in drums to add to their storage tanks. It is actually cheaper than ordering #1 as well.

I do not know of any specific temperature in which IH recomends to let the engine idle all night long. As a heavy diesel mech for 20+ years I do not worry about what Ford says cuz they do not make the engine, they are merely a vendor for the engine mfg.. Temps of -20F should not be a problem for good fuel and a good block heater. I would invest in electric battery warmer blankets, I have had battery acid freeze before. I also have fuel line heaters because I go up to Yellowknife, N.W. Ter, Canada about once /winter and it gets extremely cold up there.

I drive my X daily for a total of at least 60 miles. It sits all day outside in the parking lot at work. Last week the temps were -24 on the way into the office. Warmed up to -15 or so, started on the first try each time.

Plug your vehicle it if it's sitting in negative temps for more than 12 hours straight. Nothing scientific, just my personal experience. If it does't start, don't keep trying to start it or you'll burn out your starter. To the tune of $500, you'll learn your lesson really quick if you need a new starter. Ask me how I know. There's nothing you can do until that block is warmed up, so just plug it in if it doesn't want to start. You'll typically want at least 3 hours of plug-in time for optimal starting conditions as it takes a while to heat the block.

Do you guys ever think that maybe humans are not meant to live in such cold climates? Jeez, forget about fuel gelling, I'd be more worried about my blood! Forcast for tonight is 27 and that is enough for me to think about moving further south. If only I knew more Spanish...

WOW that's cold!!! Look out for the ice! You Texans probably don't realize that water freezes at 32 degrees and that can cause slippery conditions on the roads!!!!
