I'm looking for an Excursion and wonder if there's any easy way to determine if a model has a towing package? Heck, I'm not sure what is included with the package, but obviously I want to tow with the vehicle and don't want to get burned by a used car salesperson who wants to make a sale.

I've noticed some of the 2000s, even Diesel models with small side mirrors. Yet they are advertised as having the towing package. So I'm not sure if the mirrors are an indicator. Also, some of the large mirrors extend, is this just an option on different years?

Thanks in advance and looking forward to getting one.

Hi Jack, welcome to the site!

As for a towing package, it has nothing to do with the mirrors. Actually, I believe all X's come with a towing package. The towing package is the trailer hitch mounted underneath the rear bumper.

Here's a picture of the towing package on my X:

These are the larger, extending mirrors:

These mirrors have been optional on all Excursions since they were first built in 2000. They folt in and out and extend out pretty far as well.

Thanks! I wasn't sure if the towing package included any oil or trans cooler or anything else that might help towing, but thought I'd ask. Thanks! I kind of figured this beast would come stock with what's needed. And yes, I found the big mirrors on the 00 helpful, but they didn't extend outwards and I know I've seen that on other models/years.

Thanks for the welcome!

2001 was the first year of the extendable trailer tow mirrors.

Just an FYI, the 2000 trailer tow mirrors are the same length as the newer model mirrors when in the extended position. So it can be said that the newer style mirrors, collapse rather than extend, comparativley speaking...

Ya got me confused... the picture above is of my 2000 X with the mirror collapsed. It extends another several inches out.

What exactly did you mean by the above post?

I test drove another 2000 today, a diesel, those mirrors did extend/collapse. FWIW: One dealer told me that the moveable mirrors were avaialbe mid 2000 and that seems to jive with what I've seen.

Jack,

I purchased mine in August of 2000. I guess that would put the build date for my X past the mid-2000 model year so I just assumed that all 2000's had extendable/collapsable mirrors. Either way, I definitely like them. The blind spot mirrors are a Godsend.

The Limited does come standard with HD towing. The telescopic mirrors were a $60.00 option. Keep in mind, I can only speak to the Limited.

ALL Excursions have a "towing package". As stated above, it is just the mirrors that are an option.

And sorry...I shoulda said 2000 was first year for extendable mirrors. The '99 Super Dutys had tow mirrors that did not extend. Sorry for the confusion. As JackB said, mid-year 2000 was the change for both. My buddy has a 2000 with TT mirrors that do not extend but the build date was late '99.

Eric, did you take that picture specifically for this post?! Now that's dedication!
