In this forum it is unfair to even mention Doge or GM. Why?- they dont make an SUV with a diesel. If GM would get it in gear and offer the Duramax in the Yukon XL a fair comparison can be made- until then you can't.
My 2 cents.

This is really repetitious, but here you go...
Unless you intend to drive 50K miles a year or tow 10,000 pounds weekly - get the V10. It will take you over 150,000 miles of driving before you break even on fuel and the cost of the diesel engine compared to a gas engine, not to mention the noise, the smell, the weight and the extra expense for maintenance.
Alsothe little tidbit that a V10 with 4.3 gears will outperform a diesel for everything but long term towing and is much more pleasant to drive. Diesels stink - literally.
Good luck.

John, you bring up a good point. The Powerstroke Excursion is what I would consider the ultimate SUV. There is no other comparison. When I bought my first Powerstroke in a '97 F250, I swore to never go back to a gas engine and hoped that someday I would be able to have a diesel-powered SUV. Low and behold the Excursion was born and I ran out and bought one. I have never looked back.
BTW, -24 degrees here in MN last week and the diesel ran just fine. Been starting the first time without being plugged in while sitting out all day in -10 and colder temps.
We've had a little over a foot of snow in the past 3 days. Been in 4x4 all weekend and finally turned it off today now that I can see pavement again on the roads. Man, do I love this thing!!!

Eric-
I am a GM guy- Pontiac really, I have had many GTO's/firebirds. Anyhow- I recognize the value, comfort, economy in a diesel powered Ex. I had a 98 Tahoe- I did not like it, fuel economy was very poor and it's stopping ability was extremely poor- I actually felt unsafe a few times- it required a lot of pedal effort to stop.
I have a Chrsy. mini van now- love it it does everything I need except tow, it mpg- 17-19 combined, I figure if I can get a PSD Ex- with a relatively close mpg rating- everybody wins.

The only reason I would purchase a diesel over a V-10 would be if I was going to tow on a regular basis. Most people, in my opinion, purchase an excursion for hauling their families. I have four kids under 13 yrs old and their loud enough without the extra noise from a diesel, lol! My father owns a f-250 (2000) diesel and its sounds cool, but loud. I own a 2000 excursion V-10 and it has 93000 miles and it stills runs perfect. |

Mike,
That is excatly the reason to get a diesel.....to drown out the screaming, crying, yelling, and whining (we have 3 kids under 4 and a PSD X).

Thanks everyone for all your helpful suggestions!! We just bought a 2000 Excursion Limited V10 (the diesel was a little more than we wanted to budget for).
