I have a 2000 excursion which I love. I'm researching tire replacement due to the recall. Considering the Michelin LTX M/S. Don't do any off road driving. Want something quiet with good wet/snow handling. Have never been happy with the way it handles in the snow; traction is horrible! Anyone with experience with these tires?

I have not had experience with those but I do have The michelin SUV tires and they are great. If you go to Michelin's web sight they rate all their own tires so ou can match them to your driving.

I've discovered that my nice new tires are rated at 80 psi cold max.
When my tires were replaced, the pressures were set to the standard 50 and 55 as per the sticker on the door frame.

Seems kinda low to me. So I went and put the numbers up to 60 and 65. This has resulted in a less squishy ride and now it does not seem so sluggish. Also, I have a better feel for the road.

The reason I started checking the tire pressures was because I had occasion to do a quick move back into my lane at about 60mph and the truck did a really wierd round roll. It scared the b-jesus out of me when it happened. I've never had that happen before. The roll was just a short singe sideways movement and recovery was no problem but the whole thing was one scarry feeling nontheless.

Does anyone have any idea as to what the tire presssure should be set for on these new firestone steeltex load range E tires for the EX?

Well... I was looking at Eric Long's photos on Helwig sway bar installation and found his photo of the peeling Steeltex sidewalls. I have to tell my story...

I bought My Ex in May of 2003. It had the OE SteelTex R4S "D" ranges on it, with 47k on them and the truck. Two weeks later, we drove to Ohio to pick up our 'new' '94 Airstream. On the way home, I stopped for gas and did my usual walk-around and checked the tires. It looked as though someone had slashed one of the sidewalls... repeatedly around the raised white letters! Then I checked all of them... and they ALL looked that way! I finished the drive home and called our local Firestone store in Iowa City, IA.

The manager told me to bring it in and he'd look at it.

I took it over two days later, and he looked at them and told me that the sidewall damage was merely cosmetic and that I shouldn't be concerned. I told him that I was fine with his assessment, but that I would like for him to write that the damage was merely cosmetic on my service ticket, and guarantee that the sidewalls would last until the tread had worn out.

He decided that it would undoubtedly be in his best interest to contact Firestone, and they decided to pro-rate the replacement "E" range R4S tires which I found to be satisfactory.

After Firestone announced the recall on the SteelTex AT's I contacted Firestone Corporate and they sent me paperwork for reimbursement. I photocopied the original pro-rated replacement paperwork, and Firestone reimbursed me the entire amount I paid to have the tires replaced.

However, I've never bothered to replace the spare. Last weekend, I went to the Davenport, IA Firestone store and again they told me that the "D" range R4S didn't qualify for the recall. I spoke to the manager and told him the story, and asked what we could do to replace the "D" range with an "E" range tire. He gave me full credit for the "D" range tire (now five years old, but never on the ground) and charged me a whopping $6 for a new "E" range, plus $16 to mount and balance it; a grand total of $22 to exchange it!

So, I have to say I can't complain at all about how Firestone has handled replacing the OEM tires...

I would have to agree. I brought my X to the local Firestone shop at the time when I had the peeling sidewall issue. They gave me a credit based on how many miles were on the tires and put new tires on. Considering I didn't buy the tires from them originally, I was really impressed with how it was a no-brainer for them to do the right thing. I eventually had all 5 of mine replaced at a Ford dealer during the recall. I now have BFG Rugged Trail T/A Tires and I love them. Much better in the snow than the Steeltex's.

I got my 2003 about a month ago, and i've just discovered this recall information. Mine has the Steeltex R4S Lt265/75R16 LR D tires. Are these included in the A/T recall?

John, I believe the recall expired in September of '04.

John, the R4S "D" ranges were never included in the recall; as a matter of fact, the recall info specifically EXCLUDED them. However, if your sidewalls are deteriorating, splitting, or peeling I'd take them to the nearest Firestone dealer. They should at least adjust them on the "E" range version for you. Then, call Firestone Corporate and see what they're willing to do for you.

If the sidewalls aren't coming apart, I wouldn't worry about them!
