I have a dumb question for you. If I buy a grill guard (Waag?) can I bolt a winch to that structure, or does installing a winch involve a special guard and/or bumper?
Also, if I only plan on using the winch for getting out of minor situations, not serious off-road use, can I get a smaller winch? Or is it absolutely necessary to follow Warn's recommendations based on vehicle weight. For an Ex that means buying a very large model?
Has anyone installed a rear bumper guard? If so, does it interfere with the reverse sensors?
Thanks. |

I do not recommend installing a winch on any grill guard that is not SPECIFIED for a winch. Just think about the force put on that grill guard when winching. I dont know of many grill guards that can tolerate 5000-10,000 of forward pulling force on them.
If you are looking into a smaller winch, that is fine. Just remember that it's always better to have a bigger winch that you "may" need, instead of burning up a smaller one that is underpowered. According to Warn's 1.5X vehicle weight rule, it's pretty smart. But, for completelt MILD MILD winching, I suppose you could get by with a 9000 pounder. But, I wouldnt go with the X8i or the M8 because you may burn them up pulling an Excursion out of a stuck. I have put a lot of pressure on my X8000i, and I was kinda wishing I had a bigger one. Good luck.

PS.... Technically, you could mount a Warn winch anywhere that has four holes that are 10" x 4.5" apart.

Ok, so if the Waag guard I found for an Ex doesn't say anything about winches, does anyone know where I can find one that does?
Or does anyone have any experience with installing a hitch receiver on the front in order to use the Warn winch that just slides in? Any other winch advice out there?

A hitch-installed winch would be perfect for your situation where you only need to use it every once in a while. This way, you could also use it in the rear should your vehicle be positioned in the rear.
As long as that brush guard doesn't block access to a front receiver hitch, you should be fine. I would verify the dimensions of the hitch-based winch and then compare it to the dimensions of the brush guard.
