Hello All,
Was off drinking wine on the weekend down in Niagra-on-the-Lake and hit a freak winter storm on my 5 hour drive home. The Excursion handle the high winds, ice, and snow no problems. Take a look at the ice build up on the "X" in my photo album! The ice pattern on the back wheel was very cool. Just thought is was worth saying again, where all driving an awesome machine! rain, ice , snow or shine.....it's a blast to drive!
Cheers! |

The only think I would of done differently would be not to take off my winter tire so soon and consider LANDYOT's radius rod for steering wonder. The steering wonder is amplified with a heavy cross wind. Short of that is could rain ice every day I wouldn't care....well it might effect my golf game |

I am in Rochester NY and our weather is similar.. In fact my Mom is from Ottawa as well.... a beautiful city...
We had some of that nasty stuff down here too this weekend although my truck didnt create any works of art as yours did with that ice! .. so much for Spring.
I gotta ask.. I have owned my V10 x for all of 2 weeks.. and will be upgrading tires due to steeltex recall.. you mentioned that you use snows.. with agressive tread on the BFG tires you have.. do you really need snows? We had about 126" of snow this year.. so I am familar with the weather challenge..
I am planning on getting the bridgestone REVOS as upgraded tires based on reasearch done thus far.. I really was planning on needing another set for winter..
any thoughts?

Hey William,
Thanks for the reply, I agree Ottawa is a nice place to live. Here's my personal take on summer vs winter tires. Living in Ottawa we get our fair share of weather.
3 years ago my wife had a brush with death while driving into work one morning with summer tires during a winter storm. It was that wake up call that made us to purchase winter tires for all of our vehical.
With my 03 Excursion and the stock BGF (rugged trail) the tread pattern in not that aggresive and I found myself spinning my back wheel alot in 2 wheel drive mode. In 4x4 it's not bad but stopping the truck is another thing all together. 4x4 mode will give you a false sense of security and you find yourself silding toward a stopped vehical at some point.
Now there are a pile of trade offs you can make to only have one set of tires. For example the BFG All Terrian T/A are great in the snow, good in wet condition, and semi good on ice. When it comes time to replace my summer tires I will purchase the T/A. I also noticed that most plow trucks around here use the T/A. The T/A in the summer are a bit noiser and require a proper rotation schedule to prolong tread life. Here a link for your review.

The winter tires I use are made by Nokian. The tire style is the Hakkapeliitta LT. Here is a link to take a look.
http://www.nokiantires.com/newsite/selector.cfm
I picked the 235/85R16 on Ford grey stock rim. Cost me about $1500.00 cdn. Having the extra rims cost a little more but mounting and unmounting tires every winter is a pain and very hard on the tire itself.
I purchased the Hakkapeliitta LT at a Mazada dealer. They where the only ones to stock this type tire. Nokian is a Finland company and test there tires at the Ivalo, Finland test track.
This is my third set of Hakkapeliitta and the tire life was so good on my other cars I was able to resell them once I changed cars. My mother has Hakkapeliitta 1 for here GM subcompact and there 5 year old and still working well.
If you want to see how they look one the X take a look in my photo album under "Powerbus" heading. I will post a close up pic for you.
One more think, the Hakkapeliitta LT are studable if that is cool where you live. Canadian MOT doesn't let us stud our tires. If you are allowed to use plastic studs then do so they work great.
I hope that helps.
Cheers
Clayton
