I got mine from J.C.Whitney (had to telephone them), but have heard others say Summit Racing is a better deal.

Remove the 4 crossbars from the roof rack because they rest directly on the paint. Will eventually wear away the paint.

I removed the roof rack crossbars as soon as I saw your recommendation but, alas, I think it is too late. I see flakes of paint have already been rubbed off. Thank you Ford.

Oh, yeah, I forgot to add the following:

6. Replace the front (stabilizer?) bushings with poly-e (Autozone) ones to tighten up the front end.

Did you actually notice a difference with these? I was thinking of doing this upgrade also.

I noticed a differance. Tighter...more controlled. Feels like a much lighter truck when hitting the exit ramps...

Aaahhuuuggg! Mine is rubbing through the paint too! That stinks! I can't believe they haven't changed that! It's a 2002, for crying out loud the thing still smells like new inside!

I'm kicking myself! When we bought it new off the lot, I almost removed them. I had 2 Subaru station wagons & the roof racks whistled while driving. therefore I removed them. No whistle in the X, so I left them on.

I plan on driving these 2 Powerstrokes to the scrapyard once all usefulness has been extracted from them in 20-30years! I wonder if I could get some touchup paint to seal it from rusting later. I've been thinking about mounting the clearance lights on the X, but I didn't want to cut / drill the body & chance it rusting there later.

I have a friend that says they all end up in the junkyard sooner or later. He's 99% right I suppose. It's just hard when the X cost more than the 1st house we bought when we got married!

It already has one boo boo that most people don't even notice, Dent Doctor couldn't fix, Metal body panel too strong to push back out, "Ford Tough" I figured since the paint wasn't broken I would wait until I feel like having it bondo'd when it needs to be touched up or something bigger happens.

Has anyone noticed the underside rusting? It's like Ford cheaped out on Paint.

Dennis,

I had my X undercoated when I bought it new in '00. The underbody looks to be in nice condition, but this may also be attributed to the several quarts of oil that have been caked onto it over the 121,000 miles I've got on it due to various massive oil leaks I've experienced. I do have the typical surface rust on the axles and suspension components, but nothing to worry about. The actual underbody looks quite nice considering the amount of salt we get here on the roads during a winter. I would imagine MI has similar salt usage policies as MN. My X usually has white streaks down the sides of it during the winter from all of the salt buildup!

YES. ford cheaped out on paint both outside and inside and underside.
I ended up using a blotch of good thick grease on the rust spot on my roof which is about the size of a quarter.
More importantly though. have a look up under where the fuel cap is. I found much corosion and flakey paint on and around the filler pipes. It looks like the best solution is just oil the daylights out of it..
