I have a lockout hub on my 2000 X that has quit working. It will work if I switch it to manual. It looks like a rubber seal is coming out of the turn dial area making it hard to switch from auto to manual settings. Anyone know if these can be repaired? Seems like I should be able to replace a gasket or seal somehow to get it working correctly again. While the auto feature is not a necessity, it is nice for the wife not to have to get out and lock the hubs if she ever needs it. Plus, as it is now, it is so hard to turn that you need a pliers to grip the selector and get the leverage you need to get it from auto to manual settings. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I can't speak from experience on these specific hubs, but I did replace my fair share of hubs when I had my Bronco. The general principles probably still apply.

You can disassemble a hub. Typically there are multiple screws that hold the cover on, usually with some type of allen wrench or hex wrench. There will then be some form of c-clip that needs to be pried off with a needle nose pliers. It is possible that if the gasket is bad, has failed, is coming out, that water got inside the hub and has corroded and caused it to start siezing.

I would wait to hear from others who respond to the thread for cost on replacing the hub...I'm just not familiar enough with these newer ones mainly because mine haven't had a problem, yet. It may need to be greased and have the seal replaced, which for the most part, is doable on the more traditional manual hubs.

I'm curious to see what the responses are to this too. The hubs on my 2000 have quit working in the "Auto" mode as well (With less than 50K miles...way to go Ford..) Unlike yours though, mine are still easy to turn and show no visible damage.

The hard turning problem has happened to me with two different hubs. The first one was hard to turn so I took a pliers and forced it. Looks like an O ring then was wedged in the turning wheel portion. I pulled bits of the O ring out of the turning wheel area and now it turns easy but of course no autolocking. The second time I saw this is when I tried to order a used replacement hub online. When it came, it was hard to turn and I saw the O ring already sticking through the turn wheel edge. I pushed it back in with a screwdriver and it turned easy but it never did work in automode so I am returing it. I am guessing both somehow lost their airtight seal because as I understand these things work on some sort of vacuum but don't really know so I am hoping someone can give us advice about rebuilding them.

I've had problems with the lock outs on my F250. At first the driver side got really hard to move due to the gasket seal being pushed out. At 150K the passenger side fell off the hub and since the driver side quit working I had to do something, it was stuck in 4x4. A call to Ford and the price per hub was $110, too much for junk. I called a parts store and found Warn makes them. $175 for both sides and they work so much better than stock. On another Ford site a guy bought Warn Premiums for a little more and there supposed to be even better. I'm not sure if the auto system works with the new Warns because my vacume seal is shot. Two Ford trucks both with auto 4x4 both have gone south. 99 F150 at 35K and the 99 F250 this last winter.

If you take the time to take them off to clean your better off just tossing them in the garbage and buying real lock outs!

I know that Mile Marker makes replacement hubs for the F-250, here is the website of a gentleman that has replaced his lockouts with the Mile Markers, however I know that he has disabled the ESOF function. So Im still confused about how the whole system works now, I guess the switch works like a floor shifter now!! If anyone has an input it would be great!! But as far as the factory hubs go, my 2000 Ex is stiff as all get out too!! But I think Im going to just pull them apart clean them and lube them!! Hope this helps some!!
