I was on eBay and noticed people selling original Ford X keys. They stated you would have to get them programmed if you only have one, otherwise if you already had original keys you could program them yourself. Question: Do you have to have the key programmed , if so, why does it need to be programmed?

Ford uses a system they call PATS. It stands for Passive Anti Theft System. In a nutshell, the key has a chip in it. That chip needs to be programmed, so the system recognizese it as a "correct" key. The reason you need 2 keys is so a valet can't make a copy of your key and proram it, too. Pretty slick, but I think professional thieves can still get around it. |

I just got mine, bought my 2000 Ex used and just got mine re-programmed for 50 bucks!! The key was like 15.00 and the re-program was like 40 or so!! Works good though!!

Did you go to a Ford dealer or to a Locksmith?

I went to the dealer, just to be on the safe side, I live in Fayetteville NC, and some people here like to take whats not theirs, and I dont trust anyone with keys to my Ex. They did a great job!!
