Well, guys, I let the X go yesterday. I traded it for a, are you ready, 2004 VW Jetta TDI. It is smaller to be sure, but I just couldn't pass up the chance to get 40+ mpg. My fuel bill was running $250-275/month and showing no sign of slowing down. I just couldn't keep that going.

I'll miss the interior room without a doubt, but it is fun to drive a 5-speed stick shift again. That little TDI engine will get! I've enjoyed having actual accelleration again.

I do miss the X. It was very reliable and did everything I asked. I hope the next owner takes good care of it.

Take care all.

Rick

Rick,

I'm sure a lot of us have considered a similar move...I know I have. Good luck with the TDI. Post some pics, we'd like to see it in the registry. Those TDIs are quiet!!!

TRAITOR

Just kidding Rick - best of luck to u and come back to visit WHEN you get homesick for the Big Un !

You obviously must have felt you were able to get enough on your trade to justify the move...

My concern is that I would lose SO much on the trade value and pay such a premium on the "little" car that the 20 mpg difference in the fuealge would take me YEARS to recover...

I'll keep mine. Though I will be driving the GT40 (25MPG) and riding the KLR650 (40MPG) more often. The last time I put gas in the X was April 27th ... and the fuel cost was $1.63 & 9/10s per gallon.

I had one of those! Best bike (for me) EVER. Wish I wouldn't have sold it. Put about 60K on it. And I got better than 40MPG... You must have a lead wrist.

I grew up on dirt bikes. The KLR650 is a single-cylinder 4-stroke engine, and I've had a couple 650-twins that got over 60MPG. My favorites were a couple of Yamaha big-bore 2-strokes ... both 400s ... a DT400 and an IT400. I really enjoyed being able to "grunt" around on those and not have to worry about keeping either within a power band like most smaller 2-strokes. My only complaint about the KLR650 is it's geared too tall for any woods riding. Trail riding is fine, but in the woods, you do a lot of slow bark-breaker work.

LANDYOT,

I'm moving to the Hampton Roads area soon (home is where the Navy sends you) and hope to get a chance to see the radius rods in person. Since you have a KLR too, maybe you can give me some info on places to ride in the area?

Matt - Looking forward to meeting you. I'm a little familiar with the USN ... build aircraft carriers & subs. As far as where to ride, I haven't had a chance to scout out any places ... been using the bike to commute. I used to have prepaid access to 10K+ acres between Willaimsburg & Richmond, but that was 20 years ago, and that area has started developing. Tell you what ... if you can find a good place after you get here, I'd like to go riding with ya' (always feel safer trail ridin' using a buddy system). And if you need help figuring out where to go, come on over and we'll break out a few maps ... or look on the 'net. Good luck with your transfer to Hampton Roads.

I'll be offline for the next few days -- the move is upon us. But I'll be in touch soon.
