I'm at a loss here. Firestone has recalled the tires and the letter I got from Firestone says I can have any of 5 or 6 different brands. I called the 800 number listed and was told that I have to go to either the Ford dealer or a Firestone retail outlet. [Store] The problem here is that they only carry Firestone, Bridgestone and maybe one other brand. I also would like to move up to the 285/75 series but am told that they are NOT made in load range E. Every time I call the hot line I get a different story. One time they say I can get the larger tire if I pay the difference. Another time I was told I HAD to get the stock size Firestone. [265/75] I would also like to get an all terrain tread. Possibly BFG. Has anyone else solved this or did everyone get the stock tires. Thanks

Check the archives here as well as Ford Truck Enthusiasts. There already have been a couple of lengthy posts about this. In short, start visiting Firestone and Ford dealers and see what they can do for you. I don't remember the details but Friestone will give you 2 choices one Firestone, one Bridgestone. Your Ford dealer has 3 choices; a BFG all terrain (but only if you have 4wd) and 2 Pirelli models. I ended up with Pirelli Scorpion A/T's on mine. Despite my initial objections, they've turned out to be pretty good tires (especially for free!). Check the Firestone website for the exact details on this recall. Some owners have been able to negotiate size upgrades, mostly through their Firestone dealer and have reported this information in the postings. Good Luck!

hey there micheal. If Im not mistaken, the load rating on that is recommendened for the X is "D", isnt it? So why do you need an "E"?

Anyways, go into a firestone dealer. They wont give you as much hell for the recall as ford will. They will usually be more than happy to give you credit for the "old tires", to put towards some 285's. Good choice in size. I am running 295's, with a lift. Without the lift they rubbed.

Good luck, and post more if you have questions.

According to what I've been told by both Firestone and my local Ford dealer, part of the recall deal is to change from load range D to E. Also, with the new site here, how do I do a search for old topics. I'm having a senior moment here as I don't see any links. ???

Thanks all for the response.

oh wow. Thats not good. because I replaced my firestones with terra grapplers, and they are load range D. *sighs* Oh well I guess. I have no complaints with em!

U know, i havent had the pleasure of looking around the new forum much. I am so used to the old setup. One thing that throws me off about the new page is that you have to actually click on a differnt link for the excursion forum that takes you to another page. Its kinda wierd.

oh well huh!
have fun,

All you really need to remember is http://www.fordexcursions.com now. Everything below the SuperMotors banner is "Ford Excursion" related. Just follow the links on the left-hand navigation bar underneath the Ford Excursion pic!

Okay, I finally did it. After going round and round with Firestone on getting larger tires [285/75] I gave in and replaced my Firestone tires with Pirelli Scorpions. The local Ford dealer did the switch as well as some warranty work. They are the stock size [265/75] however, they appear to be a bit larger than the old Firestones. They ride much nicer and look much better too. However, I did have a problem convincing the local Ford dealer that the tire pressure should be at least 50, 55 and must be torqued down to 165 pounds/feet of torque. The kept saying that the lug nuts would spilt, etc. Once before I had them look it up on their computer and 'lo and behold it also stated 165. I don't understand the dealer NOT knowing the specs for these machines. I mean, it's their baby.

My experience is that dealers don't even bother to properly torque the lug nuts. The impact wrench is their precision tool!

Gasp... impact wrench...

Well when I had mine replaced at a firestone/bridgestone dealer, I watched the guy use the impact wrench to get them on and then he went around and used the torque wrench. That was nice of him. However, he did not back the nuts off before he went for the click. Go figure.

Seems if you want something done right you gotta do it yourself these days.
