Hello,
I've been looking for an X for a long time and want to buy one soon. I'm looking for a 2002-03 7.3L Limited. Just to make sure I don't shoot myself in the foot, I thought I'd ask some questions.
Should I buy from a Ford dealer? What are the advantages?
What advantage is there to buying pre-certified and what is the "engine for life" thing that Ford talks about?
Should I buy from a dealer auction? I found someone who will buy it & charge $500 for his services. Is this too much? What disadvantages are there to this method? (I've never looked into this.)
Should I look for a individual?
As you know, the 7.3L are getting hard to find and the local dealer turns them quick. (i.e. I'll have no negotiation power.)
I'm gussing that I can get a good deal via the dealer auction but if Ford won't honor the warrantee then I may want to purchase elsewhere. Any thoughts/feelings here?

You've asked several good questions, and while I fail to provide any answers, I thought I'd give you another thought. Have you checked the eBay auctions to see what the going rate is in various parts of the USA?
BTW ... welcome to the forum. |

Thanks for the good idea. After your suggestion, I looked and found more than I expected. The buy-it-now prices on several look consistent with our local dealers. (Some even more.)
I'm really trying to figure out the negatives if I don't buy from a Ford dealer.
Does anyone know how much the dealer marks up the truck? Is there a typical $$$ amount?

Jay,
Welcome to the site!
For a good idea on how dealers mark up the costs on vehicles, visit http://www.kbb.com and price out a used Excursion from a private party and a used Excursion from a dealership.
Keep in mind that prices are always negotiable with dealers. ALWAYS.
The advantages of buying from a dealer are typically their level of service, they typically don't get involved with vehicles that have voided warranties or other various problems (not as much profit when it's not in tip-top shape). These are Ford dealers mind you, not the "Quality Discount Auto Sales" down the road that has about 20 cars on the lot. Additionally, some dealers offer warranties on purchases...be sure to ask about their policies. i.e. what if something drastic happens to the truck 1 day, 1 week, or 1 month after you purchase it? The dealership may offer something to you where as a private party can offer nothing.
I can't comment on buying from an Auction as I have never done so before. This is how a lot of dealers find their vehicles, though.
On any Powerstroke Excursion, the 100,000 mile engine warranty is transferable from one owner to the next. If the X has less than 100,000 miles on it, you will at least have this warranty. There will be a $100 deductible on warranty-related repairs. As far as extended warranties go, these are typically non-transferrable...don't let a private party or an auction try to woo you into purchasing it because of an extended warranty. Read the fine print before purchasing!
All in all, I would recommend that you post another message here in the forums when you've found a potential vehicle and ask questions about it. Depending on the year and the mileage, members can chime and and tell you what things to look out for on it before your purchase. This can help tremendously so you don't buy it and THEN find out all of the things you should've originally examined!

Thanks Eric. That was a suprise. I compaired the KBB suggested retail with the trade-in values. BIG difference. (Suggested retail: $31,715 and trade-in: $23,725) I can understand some markup for detailing, advertising, etc... but over 7G's WOW! That leaves a lot of room to come down. This also explains the why I see several advertised for the same/close $$$ when they have very different options.
If I don't purchase from a Ford dealer, how can I check on voided warranties and anything else I should know about it? I'm sure this must be in some report somewhere but what is that called?

Jay,
http://www.carfax.com
You can get a free report or a more detailed report if you fork over a few $$.
If you purchase from a dealer, you should also run this check, or ask them to look it up on their computers so that you can see the results as well. Ford has a system called OASIS that keeps a complete history on a VIN number...at least a complete history on all visits/repairs Ford dealerships performed on a vehicle.
