Long story short, the X I purchased has a new tail pipe installed by the dealer.

It appears to be 2 3/4 inches in diameter and seems to be smaller than the rest of the exhaust that I can see behind the rear axle.

Does anyone know what size the original exhaust should have been on a 2000 PSD X?

The reason I am asking is that when I step on the accelerator it feels as though it is being restricted and isn't providing the power it should for the RPMs it is spinning.

Thanks in advance for any help.

hello absolutezero. First off, the stock exhaust size for a 2000 PSD is 4" in diameter. This diameter, is a perfect size for the diesel to breathe.

Number2. When you "step on it", do you mash it to the floor, or gradualy step in to it? Diesels will never accelerate like a gas motor. To get the best accelaeration, you have gradually lay into it.

But then again, if you exhaust (not tailpipe) is 2 3/4", you might have some impotency going on. Dont worry, it happens to a lot of men your age. Lol, sorry if I hurt your feelers.

I believe the stock exhaust size is 3" or 3.5". I think the downpipe is 3" and the exhaust is 3.5"? Can someone else chime in here?

I measured this morning and the I.D. is 2 3/4 on the tail pipe. Which would lead me to believe, through comparison, that the remainder of the exhaust is at least 3 inch.

Would 1/4 inch make a difference?

I've just ordered an AFE air filter for it hoping that might help with some of it.

Also, Bryant, normal acceleration for me is taking it up to about 1,750 RPM - 2,000 RPM. It is that range between 2,000 and 2,500 RPM where it feels a little less powerful. But I don't expect it to rev like a gasser. I never floor it.

BTW, would anyone know at what RPM the turbo kicks in? In my Jetta TDI it kicked in at 1,900 RPM.

Thanks again.

The area of a 2 3/4" circle is 5.94 sqare inches, and the area of a 3" circle is 7.07 square inches.. There is 19% more area in the 3" circle.

Pie-R-Squared!!

My downpipe is 3.5" and my exhaust is 5". That's 9.616 square inches and 19.625 square inches, respectively.

In a word, yes. 1/4" makes a bigger difference than you think it would (refer to above math.) Your new free flowing intake isn't going to help a lot if you are that restricted on the other end. If you want better performance, a freer flowing exhaust will likely be in order.

As far as where the turbo kicks in exactly, I'm not sure. But when I drive home today I'll watch the boost gauge and tach and post an asnwer later tonight.

ACTUALLY... the turbo kicks in as soon as the truck is exhaustng....

Now, when does it actually start packing the air into the intake and giving you some real boost ???
Most 6-oh's get some boost at about 2000 rpm... but some programmers help it in a little lower than that...

but what I HAVE found witht he predator is that with all the rain we've had around here, u have to be careful going around slow corners and giving it gas... because once the turbo builds some boost it WILL get squirrley real fast !

And if you compare the stock downpipe to even a 3.5" downpipe you'l wonder how the stock one allows ANY exhaust to get out !

OK, my scientific watching the tach and boost meters yielded the following results:

No boost up to 1500 RPM.
Boost starts kicking up by 1600 RPM, only like 5psi.
By the time 1700-1800 RPM hits boost is cranking, and I can hear and feel it.
Boost maxes out at like 18-20psi.

This is a 2001 7.3 PSD, with the intake and exhaust done, no chip.

Your mileage may vary.

Dave, Thanks for taking the time to sample and post your results!!

To those of you with larger exhaust; 1) Are they mainly expensive because they are stainless, and 2) If I went to a truck exhaust shop would I be able to get away with paying less?
