Ok,

I had ceramic brakes put on the front of my 01 PSD X about 3 months ago. I don't know if the guy torqued the lugs to spec or not.

About a month ago I started getting this slight bump or vibration in the front end under moderate highway braking. It's gotten progressively worse and is not pretty bad under highway braking, especially on a downgrade. I can really feel it in the steering wheel and all over the truck.

Are my front rotors trashed? Did the brake guy mess me up? They've never been turned and I have about 52,000 miles.

Help.

Thx.

They are not trashed -- just warped. They need to be turned so that they get resurfaced to eliminate the warping. This will produce smooth braking again.

Make sure your guy tightens the lug nuts to 150-165 ft-lbs. Make sure they are all EQUAL. Re-torque the lug nuts after a couple hundred miles of driving with the resurfaced rotors.

The brake rotors are notorious to warp on these trucks and the F series as well. The problem is heat and the lack of these massive rotors to dissipate the heat quick enough.

My rotors warped at 22K miles of ownership. Ford recut them and 5 miles later where warped again, recut and again another 5k where warped.

I decided to go with a aftermarket drilled and crosscut rotor with Kevlar pads. To replace the after market rotors where $100 more than the OEM units and I gave it a try. I haven't had an issue for 17K miles. Even towing heavy loads they stay pretty cool.

Another factor that leads to premature warping is how the rotors are made. Composite rotors, where the hub is a different material than the friction surface, will warp much more quickly than a cast rotor. Of course, cast rotors have their problems, too. I guess I've been lucky with my front end / tire guys. I've never had a warp problem with my rotors. I have 70k with only one brake change and I drive mine hard all the time.

I just did brakes on Friday.

I had been using Meineke because of their lifetime parts replacement policy. But the last set of pads and rotors lasted 12,000 miles.

My new mechanic, an honest guy from my church, told me two things: there are many levels of quality on the pads and rotors, Meineke uses the cheapest level, because they LOVE it when you come back, they hit you for $200 of labor to replace those cheap pads.

He also said he had a former Meineke mechanic who worked for him, and that they were paid commission on the parts they replaced. So they NEVER wanted to turn rotors, and they did calipers all the time because the mechanic could talk folks into them.

I had ceramic pads and the biggest toughest rotors put on, he says I'll be good for 40K - 50K miles. My Nissan Sentra got 98,000 miles on the first set of pads and rotors, they were ceramic also.
