I am looking at purschasing a used Excursion with the PSD in it. I have done a lot of research on edmunds as well as KBB site. However both sites seem to be some what inconsistant with what they have has a dealer price compared to what people are really selling the Excursions for at dealers. I have looked all over the place and can't really find any locally. I am thinking about making a 2-3 hour drive to two dealers which have the following.

- 2001 Limited 4x4 with PSD, miles 31220 (1FMSU43F31EC54726) Asking price $31995

- 2002 Limited 4z4 with PDS, miles 45843 (1FMSU43F12EB16524) Asking price $33977

As far as I can tell they both have the same options in them.

7.3 LITER POWER STROKE V-8 DIESEL ENGINE WITH THE LIMITED TRIM PACKAGE. ELECTRONIC 4-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, TRAILER TOW PACKAGE, 4-WHEEL ANTI-LOCK DISC BRAKES, ELECTRONIC SHIFT ON-THE-FLY 4X4, TELESCOPING HEATED TRAILER TOWING POWER MIRRORS, LT265/75RX16E OWL ALL-TERRAIN TIRES, DUAL POWER HEATED MEMORY SEATS W/LUMBAR SUPPORT, POWER WINDOWS/LOCKS/MIRRORS, FRONT AND REAR AIR CONDITIONING, THIRD ROW LEATHER SEAT, CRUISE CONTROL, TILT WHEEL, ADVANCED SECURITY GROUP, REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY, ILLUMINATED RUNNING BOARDS, FOG LAMPS, POWER ADJUSTABLE GAS/BRAKE PEDALS, REAR WINDOW DEFROSTER, ROOF RACK, PRIVACY GLASS, REVERSE VEHICLE AID SENSOR, PREMIUM ALLOY WHEELS, OVERHEAD TRAVEL COMPUTER

Is it worth it to pay $24.99 to carfax to find what little information on the vehicle as they do? I am trading in my F-150, 2001 Lariat 4x4, 5.4L with 71k miles. What should I try to get either one of the vehicles for? What is a fair price that I should be looking at as far as ball park. According to KBB site the 2001 I listed above is already $3k under what a dealer should be asking for it. Is this a good deal as is or should I try to get them to go lower? Would traying to get the 2001 for right under $30k and the 2002 for around $30,500 be fair? I have read through the boards but curious if someone could lend some advice to help me out. I am thinking about trying to do something this weekend on either one of them. I have been researching for over two weeks online as well as at local dealers. Thanks..

2002 Excursion 4x4 7.3L

First off, welcome to the site. Congratulations on the future purchase of an Excursion, you will not be disappointed!

As for the 2001 vs. 2002...the biggest difference between these two models will be the interior features. 2002 will most likely have climate control and an improved interior vs. the '01. As far as the engine, there may be a slight difference in horsepower and torque, but minimal at best (IMHO).

The fact that the '02, with higher miles, is priced $2k higher than the '01 with less miles is odd. Definitely some bargaining room there. The '01 may just be a great price. Those are both low mileage vehicles (particularly that '01).

As for carfax -- yes it is worth it. With these vehicles having such low mileage, they will still come with a 100,000 Powerstroke warranty (transferable from owner-to-owner). You want to verify that these vehicles are not red flagged or void of any warranties. For $25, it's worth it do to the carfax thing.

I think your thoughts of trying to get the '01 for under $30k and the '02 for $30,500 are perfectly legitimate. The '02, at least to me, seems like it would have the most bargaining room.
