I have an '01 Ex PSD and lately I've noticed a squalling sound when I rev the engine. At first it sounded like the serpintine belt squalling but now I'm beginning to think it's maybe a bearing in the water pump giving up.
Should I try some belt dressing?
Also, if it IS the water pump, is that covered under the 100K warranty? I only have 54K on it and I'd like to have some good background info before I go to a dealer for help.
Is there a deductible with the warranty work? I havn't had to use this and don't know.
Thx

Hello, heres a quick way to tell if it,s your belt, have someone in the truck raise the rpm until noise appears, then squrit some water on the belt . If it's thebelt , the noise will change or go away. NEVER use belt dressing, that stuff only make a mess that you will have to clean when you get to the real problem. As for your other questions , I will let someone else answer who is more knowledgable on those subjects. |

Yep, the water pump is included on the warranty! There is a $100 deductible for any warranty claims.
Here's the list of other items covered under the Powerstroke warranty from Ford's website:
Powerstroke Engine
5 years/100,000 miles
Models available include: Excursion; F-Series and E-Series (models over 8,500 lbs. GVWR)
The New Vehicle Limited Warranty covers certain direct injection diesel engine components against defects in factory-supplied materials or workmanship for five years after the warranty start date or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first. After the end of the Bumper to Bumper Coverage period (three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first), you must pay a $100 deductible for each repair visit.
Ford Motor Company or Ford Motor Vehicle Assurance Company covers these components: cylinder block, heads and all internal parts, intake and exhaust manifolds, flywheel, timing gear, harmonic balancer, valve covers, oil pan and pump, water pump, fuel system (excluding fuel lines and fuel tank), high pressure lines, gaskets and seals, glow plugs, turbocharger, powertrain control module, electronic driver unit, injectors, injection pressure sensor, high pressure oil regulator, exhaust back pressure regulator and sensor, camshaft position sensor, accelerator switch. NOTE: Some components may also be covered by the Emissions Warranties, with no deductible.

Well,
As follow-up, I was correct - it WAS the water pump. Took it to a huge local dealer with a fancy serivice center with free coffee, doughnuts and a morning shuttle back to work. I was squalling good under the hood when I rolled her in.
This was on a Tuesday morning at 8 AM. Finally picked up my truck Friday afternoon at 3 PM...FOUR days. ANYway, they said the water pump was shot - they even remarked that it 'didn't have any coolant left in it'... I was puzzled by this remark because the truck never once even offered to heat up beyond the low/normal range.
The customer service rep seemed so rushed I didn't even think about asking him to clarify this with the mechanic. Anyone have any ideas? How could the pump be void of water and the truck not be heating up, unless it just REALLY crapped out on the way to the deal - however I NEVER saw coolant leaking under the truck - anything to be concerned about??
So they installed the new pump, and while they were at it, they gave me a new idler arm pulley, a new thermostat and a new serpine belt.
Since I hold had 54 K it was covered under the $100 deductible.
I guess I'm happy..but four days? Jeez.
Any comments?
Thx

I don't think I would have liked to be the one to open the hood to have a look see. I'd bet the water pump siezed up and the squalling was the belt getting toasted. THe Idler pully arm is curious though. The whole thing sounds nasty.
Four days is a bit long but since they provided the shuttle to work and did the work for a 100 dollar deductable, Hey.. so what ? :-)

Charles,
Glad to hear it was only $100. 4 days is quite a long time to wait for the X, isn't it!!
As for the water pump not having coolant in it...was there coolant in the system? What did they document on the invoice? They should have indiciated if there was no coolant in the vehicle in the event that there are future issues with your PSD. How far did you drive with it making "the noise?"

Here is what the invoice says:
"C/S SQUALLING NOISE COMING FROM FRONT OF ENGINE - CHECKED TRUCK - BEARING HAD FAILED IN WATER PUMP - COOLANT HAD LEAKED OUT - REPLACED WATER PUMP - T-STAT AND T-STAT NECK. REPLACE BELT AND IDDLER PULLE BECAUSE THEY WERE MAKING NOISE. CLEANED FRONT OF MOTOR AND FILLED WITH NEW COOLANT. SEE NO OTHER LEAKS AND IS NOT MAKING NOISE NOW."
I drove the X less than a week with this noise occuring, and it was intermittent during that time. The day it got worse, I took it to the shop next morning at 8 AM.
As I suspected the water-pump I made CERTAIN that the coolant level was to spec each day so she was full of coolant when I delivered it to the service center. The truck NEVER once heated even SLIGHTLY over the low-normal range it always indicates.
Thx!

Charles,
Strange.... the 6.0L PSD holds 27.4 quarts and the V10 hold 28.5 quarts of coolant.
You must of left a trail on your way to the dealer. Well, glad to hear you made it without major engine damage.
4 days?!?! they removed my whole 6.0L PSD in three......maybe the pump was back-ordered. I know a guy that had to wait 3 weeks for a rear liftgate window.
cheers

Gen-X,
Nope! I looked under the hood when I rolled it into the shop and it was full of coolant.
Dunno.
