REALLY ROUGH at "cold start" - in Florida's summer!!!!!

Hello guys- My 2002 7.3 is now 28 months old (I can't believe I've made 28 payments at $817.00 each!!) and now has 116k. All original except alternator at 69k and FIVE FREE FIRESTONE A/T Ds that replaced ORIGINAL SET at 105k !!
Even the brakes are untouched all original and about 1/2 way gone- but pulse like a big inch Harley!!

New problem: In Florida's disgusting 6 month blast furnace/sauna of a summer I have a "cold start" problem!!! If I do a normal glow and start the 7.3 instantly fires, as it always does BUT, sounds like 1/2 the engine is running and is unbelievably rough until I just touch the pedal to raise the RPM. THEN, it smooths out (fires on all and runs like the true thoroughbred/road whore that it is. If I don't glow it, same EXACT thing happens, till I do the pedal trick.
It sounds so bad and runs SO ROUGH that I have never let it rock and roll like that for more than 5 seconds before I touched the pedal. It does this EVERY time I cold start and the pedal trick ALWAYS is an effective work-around.
Fuel mieage has not dropped (19- 20 solo, 10 to 12 with monster flat front trailer) and it willl run absolutely 100% all day long after the cold start horror. There are no fuel leaks. I'm goin' crazy with this.
Is it possible I need the crossover fuel rail update OR is my electrical signal to the injectors bad OR is the computer summoning some kind of "limp-mode"??? There are no "check engine" light manifestations at all.
During the 1st 100k, I rermember this happening twice but of course, no errors. The only thing I can link this too was when I changed the fuel filter and got a little "diesel splash" on a harness in front of the turbo. The 7.3 almost sounds like a Harley or Moto Guzzi v twin with one plug fouled. It can't be a filter leak because the electic fuel pump easily refills a PSD if you run out of fuel (DON'T ask me how Iknow- LOL!!) so, I'm suspecting either plugged injectors (BUT, it never smokes and mileage/power haven't changed) that need a shot to clear their throats or weak electrical signal to half the injectors.
If I glow it twice, same exact rock n roll!! I'm gonna' try some injector cleaner . I'm moving back to "Lawn Guyland, New Yawk" this month and I'm worried about winter starts. S.O. S. S.O.S. MAYDAY MAYDAY !!!
Anyone else ever have this????????????????

Ciao, Godfather

Postus Scriptum: I want to keep this truck 20 years and need the room in the back for my next toy-
an Armalite AR-50 fifty caliber rifle/cannon!!!

Good Morning Godfather!!!

I hope all is well Island, FL, with the aftermath of Charley.

To your issue, sounds like you may have a couple leaky injectors. What might be happening overnight is the injectors are bleeding off the fuel in the fuel rail on the side that is running rough. Seeing that all it takes is a little foot action indicates a 2-5 second responce to ge the air out of the fuel rail and refill the injectors with fuel. Smoking at start?

There really is no "quick fix" for this. The injectors need to be removed and seals inspected.

Have you or do you use a lubrication additive in your fuel? If not, the injector seals could be dried out, yes dried out. Diesel fuel is very corrosive and over time eats at the internal seals of the injector.

You can try adding a couple quarts of tranny fluid (Dextron II) or a lubricant (marvel mystery oil) to a 1/4 tank and run it. It may throw a little smoke but don't worry just burning off the lubricant. To kick things off, remove the fuel filter and siphon the fuel in to a cup, add 1/4 cup of the lubricant of choice in with the fuel in the cup and put back in fuel bowl. Replace the filter and start her up. May run rough but so be it.

Give it a few days as the lubricant loosens the seals.

By the way, I don't wait for glow plugs to cycle over 65 degress. It's not needed. Glow plugs assist in the heating of the ambient air in the cylinders below 50 degrees.

I'm just happy to see that somebody is paying more than me on their monthly payments.

Then this should make you happy: 1155.47 each month. Of course, it is a 36 month loan.
