Hey "ladies" gents!
Need some help here! Looking to get some feed back from a bunch of you regarding your RPM rating at 60MPH and 75MPH.
I have been fighting with my local dealer about my fuel economy going to the birds. I have always watched my gauges and remember at 70MPH I was between 1800-2200RPM depending on grade and got 16.5 MPG. now I'm lucky if I get 10.5.
For some reason my engine is all of a sudden running at 2500RPM+ @ 70MPH!! Seems way to high. The dealer replaced the tranny and converter thinking it was a converter/overdrive/lockup issue. Cost me $800.00.
Picked her "MY X" up this morning and I hit the highway. Still runs at the same RPM of 2500. Once aging, I have always watched my gauges and strictly remember at 70MPH I was between 1800-2200RPM depending on grade.
Does the ECM control converter lock up?

The ECM/PCM has NOT been updated. I understand where you're coming from but I feel it is a failure in the ECM. Maybe a reflash would correct the problem? Thats why I question if the ECM controls the transmission. I know for a fact that the fuel pedel also plays in how the trans shifts. Hell I don't know what is wrong; I just want my truck to work they way it should especially after spending $800.00 for a repair and $200 for a rental for 2 weeks basically for nothing! Don

Don,
The ECM does hande shift point, wheel size and tow/haul. I checked the calibration list regarding mileage and no changes have been made to improve this. However, many changes have been made to fix torq shift setting and harsh shifting.
Check the latest flash changes:
http://www.flatratetech.com/6literpowerstroke/cal_updates.html This will explain what was fixed and when. good luck
Cheers

My X is a 03' with the 7.3L PSD and 4R100 tranny. Yes the tires are larger and several modifications to the truck. After modifications done there really was no change in RPM, actually noticed 100RPM lower due to the bigger tires in converter lockup.
The whole underlying question is why the ECU would all of a sudden restrict the converter to go into lockup.

You must be experiencing a decrease in power, right? Are you consistently higher in RPM from off-the-line to highway speeds? Maybe it's not the ECU and rather a sensor it relies on for data that dictates converter lock-up? Just think of how the Cam Position Sensor can bring the truck to a halt, I would put my money on another obscure sensor that the computer relies on for proper converter lockup. The question is, what sensors does it look at?

The question is, what sensors too look for? No codes in the ECM! And the techs can't figure out where to look. Did however get a check engine light today but code means nothing to the problem at hand.
YES, I seem to have less power stock, I do however have the 4 bank chip to help a little but, with the tranny acting as it is, the power is lost without lockup.
Is there a way I can force the tranny in lock up mode. A friend of mine has a dodge 2500 with a cummins and I know when that converter locks up, you better be holding on.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I was on a flight from Ottawa to Dallas and had some time to read the 2003 Ford DVD. Please check your Email! I sent you all the details about the input sensors to PCM and 4R100 tranny sensor. Let me know if this helps. P.S. send me your Email address so I can send you back the attachments.
Cheers. |

Don,
Thanks for the email. The pdf files are on the way....
Also, for the record, my 6.0L PSD and Torqshift(5R100) tranny gives me 2000RPM @ 70MPH right on the dot. Your senses are right on the money.
