Over the past few weeks I've read a few threads that dicussed the PSD mileage and how low it was, on the weekend I decided I would test this theory. For the trip to the cottage, I drove very easy, never took the tacho over 1750RPM and that limited my speed to 55 to 60MPH. Once the X hit N.O.T(normal operating temp) I reset the Ford mileage counter and began my testing. After 2.5 hrs the counter read this:

OR for the Canadian guys

This is a fairly hilly and twisting road, not some smooth flat freeway.

On the way back I drove the X harder...passed people, didn't watch the tacho at all but kept the same speed around 55 / 60MPH. The mileage dropped to 22.0 miles/gal. I drove a total of 6 hrs on less than a 1/4 tank of diesel. This 8000lbs beast got better mileage then my 1999 Ford Explorer V6.

The truck has the latest flash RC8(no P.I.) and everything else is stock.

Cheers

I took mine on a trip from Pittsburgh to the OBX, roughly 500 miles. I filled up the night before we left, and let it run in my driveway for 5 minutes before we left so the Boss, and the next generation of Bosses, would have a comfortable climate in which to ride. When we pulled out of the driveway, the computer said 3.2 mpg. By the time we got to VA Beach it read 17.4 mpg, and 17.6 when we got to the OBX. All highway driving was at 70 mph to 80 mph. So much for my reflash theory. I guess I've been doing much more city driving recently then highway.

Orf,
I'm willing to bet if you had reset the mileage counter after your where underway the numbers would have been much better. The computer store 0 miles/gal while your truck sits idle. This "idle" mileage number will lower your overall mileage average. Give it a try and let me know if the number are better. If your have RC8 flash for should reach 20mile/gal or better.

Cheers

I don't think the 5 minutes of idling affected the mileage too much for a 510 mile drive. I'm guessing my mileage was right around 17.5 at 70 to 80 mph. I've noticed that my trip computer tends to be a little optimistic when calculating mileage. My spreadsheet numbers are usually 0.5 mpg lower than what the computer claims.

Agreed, but I've seen the Ford computer get hung up and report roughly the same number all the time. Doing a reset help purge this.

I don't have the 6.0 but here's what kind of mileage I got recently with the 7.3.

My wife and I drove from Southern MN to Northern MN to Glacier National Park to Yellowstone/Teton and then back to Southern MN, the total trip took us over 3,800 miles and we got a worst MPG at 15.3 and best at 19.8. At each fill up I did the math with the calculator and not the overhead readout. At one point going down hill for a long period of time I had the overhead reading 24 mpg for over 100 miles.

we have the scmt at econ. setting and my dang wife can't keep her foot out of it. i tell her the programmer is for "when you need it" and fuel econ. but she seems to think she needs it all the time. our milage has gone down (18mpg to 15-16mpg) . i have so much trouble keeping the beast under 80 with the scmt. maybe the new will wear off and we can reap the benefits of better milage.

The programers will mess up the mpg meter on the X. Don't trust them!
