I just bought an EXcursion 2003 with 6.0, and have herd rumors that synthetic oil is not good for Diesels. I have used Mobil One in my gas engines with great results. What is the straight skinny? |

You need to be using something with low-ash. My recommendation would be Rotella T. Always had good luck with it. Also, look at using a longer-life oil filter like WIX.

I just cured my black smoke problem by switching back to standard 15W40. For the last 15K miles I was using 5W40 Shell Rotella Full Synthetic. I was also complaining to the dealer and this web-site about a soot stain on the lower quarter panel by the tailpipe. I just changed the oil 1000 miles ago and, like magic, most of the smoke is gone and the quarter panel is clean again. I am using Shell Rotella. In another 6500 miles I might even go back to the Motorcraft 15W40 that I used for the first 30K. I also have an '03 6.0. |

You need to make sure your engine oil for the PSD is API rated CH-4 for the 7.3 or CI-4 for the 6.0
This high rating is necessary due to the high pressure oil pump using engine oil like hydraulic oil, squirting it thru small orifices in the fuel injectors at pressures up to 3,000 PSI. This rating shows the anti-foaming capabilities of the oil.
I have used synthetic of the correct API rating in 15W40 10W40 5W30 and 0W30 ratings and it has worked fine. right now I have Amsoil 15W40 and it is working great!

Guys... I'd hate for any of you to ruin a dang good Powerstroke. So, I would NOT recommend using synthetic oil. I am, however, a HUGE fan of Mobil 1 Full Synthetic. I have used it on EVERY gasoline vehicle I have owned. But, I know that diesels should NEVER be filled with synthetic. NEVER.

just like any decision for YOUR truck....
it's the same concept as which type of panties you wear....
boxers or briefs....
just so long as it meets the MINIMUM rating for your engine from the manufacturer it shold do well...
I know a few that use and have used synthetic for a while and swear by it....
but I've not seen the benefit for the extra expense of syns to ME... yet

My shipment from Amsoil just arrived yesterday so I'm going to be going to synthetic oil this weekend when I do an oil change. Per their site, I've gone with the 5W30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil http://www.amsoil.com/faqs/diesel_oil_choice.htm . I'm also going to be changing out the gear oil in the front and rear ends with their synthetic oil (it's never been changed in my X which now has 126k on it). Also purchased the fuel additive stuff, too.
Will see if there's any mileage improvement (I'm doubtful) but I'm most interested in extended out the oil change intervals. I drive a lot so oil changes occur nearly ever 1-1.5 months.

Jarrett,
If you have an opinion, state it as such. It is just that, your opinion.
CH-4 is required for the higher soot loading of heavy duty engines. Engines like the VW(light duty) don't produce as much soot so that's why they can use products like Mobil 1. VW requires synthetic in their diesels.
As far as the above comment about the hydraulic use of the oil. Actually, the real truth to that was there is no way to allow this use unless you increase the capacity way above normal so that the anti-foaming agents can keep the foaming down for a normal interval. Ever wonder why the PSD has 16 quarts of oil? For the size of the engine, the oil capacity is way above the need for lubrication. The oil change capacity jumped way up when they went to the HEUI injector for that reason. It doesn't take 16 quarts of oil to keep a PSD lubricated. It's predacessors did it on 8 quarts. It went to 12 quarts in 1994, then to 16 quarts in 1994.5. Didn't take them long. The oil wouldn't make an oil change interval.
Synthetics will outperform dinos in every case. And today, there isn't one application that you wouldn't/shouldn't use it. In the late 60's, early 70's, there were a few ester based syns that caused some seal problems, but these were addressed before many even knew what synthetic oils were. Now, there isn't one synthetic oil that can harm an engine or isn't as good or better than any dyno oil out there. There are several grades of synthetics that I can explain if needed, as well as different grades or petro oil. Not much different than the 3 grades of gas at the pumps. basically, as in the gas at the pumps, you usually get what you pay for. The more expensive fuel is cleaner, and more refined. Oil is somewhat the same.
The difference between dino and synthetic is far more than simply better refined though. It's down to the base stocks being created instead of dirty stuff cleaned up.

My experience with synthetic oil in a diesel comes from 150K in a 98 VW Jetta TDI.
I used to put 35K miles on it in a year. After buying it I was using standard non-syn oil in it and found, that even though it was a new engine, it would consume about 2 to 3 quarts of oil per month (about 3,000 miles) because I was cruising for 2 hours at 85 mph (high engine rpm) each day. After switching to synthetic the oil consumption went WAY down. To not even half a quart each month. It also extended my oil change intervals to every 10K (factory recommended for synthetic oil) instead of every 3,500.
In my case, it payed for it self to switch to synthetic.
I had been using Chevron Delo 400 Synthetic 5W40 in my Jetta and am now using it in my Excursion.
Does Ford have a similar acceptable extended oil change interval for synthetic in the PSD?
