Well, maybe not burglar "proof", but it helps.
My X was broken into just after I bought it. They stuck a screwdriver into the keyhole and pried it up. They stole over $1000 worth of tools, and my new handgun (yikes). I assume they were in and out within a minute or so because my grandmother was just a few feet away and never noticed a thing! When I went to Ford to have the door replaced, the advisor recommended that I install the REAR door handle onto the drivers door. It fits fine but eliminates a keyhole. It works great, and there's no keyhole to pry into.
I wrote a gripe letter to 8 of the top Ford execs and board members about the crappy door lock mechanism.... no response, though.
The cop that wrote up my police report giggled as he told me that half of his theft reports are Ford keyhole break-ins!!!!!

No security system on that thing with all of that stuff in there? You might want to think about that too...

I've read also you can install hose clamps on the lock cam inside the door but don't know the specifics,I'll look those up.

now thats a great Idea, then there are no keyholes except the rear door and that would solve the problem. I think Im going to do that, I dont have an alarm but I talked to an installer and he told me that if I install an alarm that I should not put stickers, lights, or anything on the vehicle to tell would be thieves that you have an alarm. He said that theves know how to disarm the systems and telling them wich one you have is like giving them the keys. He said keep it quite and hidden, because your the only one who will care if it goes of anyway, he also said its better to have a lojack and an alarm with a pagger system and no horn, that way if someone jacks your ride you know as soon as its been stolen and can call the cops before the bastard get anywhere!

It really is all about size!!!!!!

To be honest, there was nothing in the truck at the time except some DeWalt power tools in their cases. That's why I was so shocked to see it broken into. I mean, it was brand new, and empty!

As for an aftermarket alarm system. I'm not sure what to think anymore. I have had aftermarket alarm systems on many of my cars, and it never fails that after 5 or so years, they ALWAYS either:
1- "mysteriously" drain the battery overnight with no trace.
2- become non-responsive to the remote key fob.
3- chirp at random times
4- disable the starter kill when I am trying to start it.

Not sure.... I have had such bad luck with even the most expensive alarms. So, when I bought this Eddie Bauer Excursion, I decided that I didn't want to screw in some aftermarket alarm that had wires running all over it.

Keep items inside the vehicle out of sight ... an old blanket works well. Alarms? Who pays attention to 'em anymore? If you want theft protection, mount a toggle switch up under the dash that disconnects the fuel pump. Costs less than $5. There are also firearm lockboxes available commercially. I'd hate to lose any of my pieces during those times when I must leave it in the truck. A Kryptonite (sp?) lock works very well when slipped through the trigger guard and around the seat frame (unload your piece first & take the ammo with you).

I've always had great success with Viper alarms. I have a Viper 550 alarm w/ remote start in my X...had it installed in 12/00. Going on 4 years of trouble-free operation. Remote start still works great and no draining battery problems. It notifies me via the keyfob when the alarm goes off but I've never had a break-in attempt on my X (knock on wood). I also have very tinted windows which makes it virtually impossible to see inside the vehicle (from the rear).

well, like I was trying to say, you dont put an alarm horn in, that way ONLY you know that somebody is messing with your truck, because your right in that, nobody cares about an alarm is going off. if your FOB tells you that the vehicle is being messed with you can run out with your gun and shoot the bastard and burry him in the back yard and hope he has enough gold on him or money in his wallet to pay for the damage the little FU*%ER did to your ride, OPPPSSSS I guess im a little sore, I had my T-bird broke into for my $30 6 year old Kenwood radio, they did $1000 damage for that! It was dumb, and it happend in my yard. I lived in the country, if I had the alarm Im talking about, there would be a fresh mound of dirt in my back yard!!!

I was talking to the wife about installing one of those paging systems in combination with the 100watt Fed Sig horn. That sounds even for a second that will have every neighbor a couple blocks up and down the street alerted
