Well, I just hit 17,000 miles on my '04 excursion. It still feels new to me (and even has the new leather smell), but whenever I touch the brakes, I can almost shake some pennies out of the ashtray!!! Can you believe this??? 17,000 miles on a NEW vehicle and the rotors are already warped!!!!!
I have read all the previous threads about the notorious rotor problems, but I didnt see any threads that had a solution.
SO..... does anyone have a tried and true solution to the warped rotor problem? I know ART is a sponsor on this site but I was hoping for a non-biased opinion of the ART rotors.
Has anyone upgraded their rotors, or found another solution that would allow me to get NORMAL wear from these rotors? 17k miles is REDICULOUS for warped rotors! And its getting WORSE by the day!
THANKS!

I am curious if the NHTSA would consider this a safety problem....
in the 40K miles I've put on my X I've had the brakes done THREE times....

and am religious about telling anyone that touches my tires to torque the lug nuts sequentially and incrementally to 150 lbft....
(course one of the tire jockeys may have not listened or understood what those words meant )

So I'll probably have togot with the Art Rotors as well..

have heard NOTHING but great things about them - other than being pricey....

With those big 37"s you'll go through the rotors pretty quick I bet

Any possibility of going with larger diameter rotors?

Johnboy isn't the lugnut torque the same for the Excursions as the Superduties?

165 ft lb torque?

I have 25k miles on my ART brakes and I still have no rotor warp problems. I don't really give credit to ART for that, but I do think these brakes are great performers compared to OEM. From my own experience, the number one cause of warped rotors is over-torqued lug nuts!!! Although I do believe that Ford undersized the brakes for a vehicle towing 10k pounds. I always recheck the lug nut torque whenever my mechanic touches my truck.

No.. the 37's were on my other Excursion (2000 Limited). My 2004 is completely stock with tiny 265/75/16's. I am jsut so dissapointed beyond words that I spend $50k on a truck to have such a severe problem with the rotors after 17k miles.

JOHNBOY---- have you considered filing a complaint about the rotors to NHTSB? I will look into doing the same. This is GOT to be a safety concern!

I'd be ticked too. However, I have 62,000 on my X. Just had the brakes checked and still have 50% padsnd no problems---unless you consider the fact it takes a mile to stop these guys.

Oh my baddddd Yeah with 265's on a heavy brake foot(non-towing) shouldn't warp them out that fast.

Hopefully you don't have to go back to the dealer every 10k for a rotor turn that would be a major PIA.

My wife's been lucky so far with about 30k on the clock and no warping of the rotors.

My ART's became warped after 50k miles (takes longer than the stock rotors, but they still warp). It comes down to torquing the lug nuts to equal values. I do believe the ART rotors stop better. I went back to factory rotors while I had my ART's off for machining and noticed a longer stopping distance (same brake pads). I look forward to going back to the ART's but at this point, the factory rotors aren't too bad (some warping)...one of those, if it ain't broke too badly, don't fix it.

There's just something about the weight of these Excursions that the Ford engineers didn't think of when they decided to go with the same brake setup as the SuperDuty's. I wish the new '05 X's had the new, larger brakes. As discussed in another thread, you could probably do a swap, but you'd need new wheels to accomodate the larger diameter rotors on the '05s.
