My personal experience....got the X with 13K miles on it. Rotors had a warp to them. Found information where Ford updated to torque to 165 ft.lbs. In the meantime, I ordered the ART rotors. Now, with over 30K on the X, still original rotors, the warp is mostly gone and only has a slight sense at times when a light pedal is appled. Not gonna use the ART's until these are gone and the pads still look new! I imagine when I approach 50K, I will go ahead and put on the ART's.
Bottom line is that the torque at 165 actually corrected the warp!
I take my torque wrench with me every time I have the tires rotated and balanced. I hand it to the tire guy and tell him to please use this so that I can be sure they are torqed correctly or else I will have severely warped rotors. They always agree and use my torque wrench.
I found several shops that did not have a torque wrench that would go that high. 2 of them only had one that went up to 140 ft.lbs. Make them show you that they can put it at 165! Most of them don't think you know what you are talking about. At least I have proved it myself to be true that 165 is the magic number!

Interesting.... you say it corrected the warping....

I don't know if I've ever heard of that ?

How long did the corrections take ?
worth trying if you have warped rotors....

80,000 miles on OE rotors and just changed the pads last week end. Knocking on wood I have had no problems since i too carry the tools for the lugs. 165 is the answer in my to rotor warping also!!

Not really sure I payed much attention to how long. When I first got the X, didn't associate the torque factor update to the warpage. I was into downloading all information I could find on my new toy so I could learn about it. Found the torque update, I think somewhere on the MyFord Website when I downloaded the manual for the X since my dealer could not make good on getting me a copy.

I just noticed over a few weeks of driving, that the brakes continued to improve, then, after reading about all the warped rotor problems, I started piecing things together and others have had the same experience.

Gents,

OK, I'm sold on the ART rotors. One of the original posters asked if you can up-size the rotors when you replace them and I don't recall that question specifically being answered. I am going with bigger tires when we replace the ones on our Excursion so I would like to start planning the brake situation to reflect that. Can anyone specifically address the matter of larger rotors?

Thanks,

Phil

You'll need to go with a larger wheel to fit larger rotors. As to whether or not ART can do larger rotors, that'd be a question best geard towards them. You can click on the SuperMotors "Resources" link above and click "Discounts" for their web address. They have their products listed on their site...so to the degree that there's a larger set of Ford rotors that you could use, great. Maybe '05 rotors would be an option depending on which wheels you go with.

just joined and went straight to this thread since i have had the same problem. i know a lot of my problem is my bad habbit of waiting till i'm right on something before stopping and then appling the brakes hard but i still want better braking. there is a company out there that sells a whole brake upgrade that comes with larger rotors and better calipers. i'll try to find it again and post it today.

Welcome to the Excursion Forum here at Supermotors

Seems that many Excursions have the same issues with brakes but I've found Superduties as well are in the warp rotor club.
