HI everyone, I have been looking to replace my STS with an X. I been reading and learning alot from this forum the past month. I decided a diesel would work best for me partly for mileage and partly for towing my 7000# trailier out west. When I started checking the area I notice the dealers around Pittsburgh had the $4000 diesel option priced $7000-$10000 over comparable models and mileage everything being the same. So right now I'm looking at the V-10s. The gasser will probably work alright but I just concernd about the spark plug/head problem and wanted to try the diesel because of its durability. My general question is did anyone else notice the diesel being so much more than they were originally optioned or is it just the dealers around the area thinking they can get extra money because it says Powerstroke on the side? I just wanted some input. I know the diesels hold there value alittle more but this is crazy. Thanks for all your help.

I have seen new diesels here in Maryland all decked out for about $48-51K brand new. "Newer " used ones with 30K miles or so can be had between $30-35k . If you buy used, avoid 2003 6.0L as they had some problems. My buddy bought a 7.3L 2001 with 32k miles on it and paid $28000, so if you look hard enough, you can find some really good deals.

2004 Ford Excursion 4x4 XLT 6.0L $39,859
2004 Ford Excursion Eddie Bauer 6.0L 4x4 $42,379
2004 Ford Excursion Limited 6.0L 4x4 $43,519

What I've been finding is 2001 limiteds with 50ish k diesel for $31,000 and an X very similiar with a V-10 for $21,000 or so. Then I started looking at the 2000 XLTs and the diesels are around $25-26k while the V-10s are around $17-19k . When I'm looking I figure the limiteds are worth $3000 extra? and the diesels maybe $3000-$4000 above that depending on condition. I think I could to fly to Texas and drive back home for less expense than what the dealers around here are selling them for. I didn't know if this mark up is common around here only or they just command this premium. I going tomorrow to several different dealers to check different X's out, one diesel and a couple gassers. I think if I waited till middle or end of winter the price might also drop an extra $2k. I going to get an Excursion just whenever a good deal comes along.

Diesels are plentiful here in MN, easy to find one at any dealership so there's not much price gouging to be done to remain competitive. Helps to have a large Ford dealership with a command on fleet sales in this area, too. Hard to pass up the deals you find on their lot.

If you do fly out of state to buy an X, you'll love the drive back. These are great vehicles to do road trips in.

Thanks Mr. long, it has to be regional. The dealerships I visited said they rarely if ever get an X in. The one I test drove today was a 2000 it had a V-10 and was bottom of the line. The whole undercarriage and exhaust was rusted, steel wheels and plastic caps, scratched up, and the hole for the hitch lock pin was E.Long-gated . That last one had me concerned as to the kind of stress the rear end and transmission went through. The dealership offered me $4000 under book value for my STS that still has 3yr/36000 mile and would not come down on price. This was a 1999$55,000 caddy to be traded in on maybe a $38000 new truck. Plus it hadn't moved in a month so they took it to auction and had to retreave it when I showed up for a test drive. I guess they just left before I showed up and the auction is tuesday so they drove 20 minutes to pick it up. I've been checking NADA and KBB for numbers and internet auto sites. What I see is Pittsburg area within 75 miles is several thousands higher than other areas. I am seriously thinking about out of state. I would like the diesel, around here its high $20's elsewhere for similiar X it low $20's. I'll keep looking

Maybe mine is too high mileage for most, but I know the diesel can last a while and at the price difference of lower mileage x's I'm willing to pay for a new replacement on the tranny and anything that goes wrong. I found my X, green/tan Limited PSD 2wd 114,000 miles for $17,000. I freaking love this thing. Already named it "The Tank."
