I was looking at a new superduty and was wondering if anybody had tried to install the new 2005 headlights in their pre '05 Excursion. From what I could tell they mount exactly the same as our lights do and physically look like there would be no problem putting them in....but before I drop that kind of jack I would like to know if anybody else has done it.

Going on what my dealer-friend has told me, the headlight assemblies are in the same position. I have been told that the only difference is that the grill goes farther down into the top of the bumper on the '05. So, if he is correct, then the '05 headlight will fit just fine into the pre '05 Excursion.
My opinion..... I think they would fit fine. I looked at my '04 and the headlight assembly screws into the fender frame and front..... DAMMIT I FORGOT THE NAME OF THAT PIECE!!!! It's the main cross-bracket that the radiator and everything else bolts onto.
So, I am GUESSING that Ford would not have replaced or re-worked all this inner componentry just for one year production run of the '05.
I wouldnt see much reason with going with the '05 headlighsts unless they are Xenon (the super-white lights as seen on Lexus, Mercedes, or the C6 Vette). My '04 has nice headlights, but still a little yellow-ish.
Do the '05's come with Xenon? I can't remember if they went from Crystalline in the '04 to jewelled in the '05 or vice versa. Oh well.....

And exactly what is the difference between 'jewelled' and 'crystaline' headlights anyway?

05 headlights will fit but require cutting of the core support. The grill will not fit with out the bumper and the core support on the 05 should used on the install . I have seen costs around 1200 dollars for the grill, lights, core support, bumper brackets, and bumpers.

I think I may go with the AIC lights....I think they look better than the 05 lights and I'm sure are way cheaper.

CORE SUPPORT.... that's the term I was forgetting when I posted on this thread. hahaha. Thanks Scott.
As for "crystaline" and "jewelled", it is just the style of headlight. I researched all the differences between the 04 and 05 when I went to purchased my EX, and found that the headlights were, in fact, different in appearance. But, if I remember correctly, the difference is just in appearance, and NOT function.
To be honest, and from what I gathered, I think the terms "crystaline" and "jeweled" JUST refer to the "look" or "style" the headlights have. Or, more precisely, the look or style of the reflective BACKING behind the bulb itself.
The change in headlight style was clearly noted on all Ford's dealer info lists for 2005, but I never got the vibe that the headlight itself was much different, other than its appearance. By this, I say that I never read where the 05 headlight went to Xenon or HID (as seen on Lexus and Mercedes). So, I would have a hard time justifying buying a whole new headlight assembly for a NEW headlight to shine JUST like the old one.
Is my information correct on the 05 headlight?
Does this all sound right?

Yes...everything you said coinsides with the research that I did yesterday and today. Exact same bulb, different physical appearance. So I think I will hold off on the headlight upgrade until I find a light that is actually an upgrade in functionality along with appearance.
