I have a '01 X 7.3 PSD and recently I've noticed that when I'm slowly moving from a parking spot, the steering has become more difficult...it's almost as if at low RPM the power steering pump isn't working efficiently. Of course, once I get the truck moving, the steering becomes normal.

I added about 5 lbs. or air (each) to the front tires and that seemed to help somewhat - however it could be my imagination or just wishful thinking.

I have about 59K miles on her now.

Does this sound like the beginnings of a power steering problem? How does that unually manifiest itself?

Also, if that is the case, I'd assume it would be covered under the 100k warranty, less the $100.00 deductible...???...

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thx!

My '00 PSD X has been like this from day one. Have to be moving/revving a little bit to make it easy to turn, otherwise you really fight to turn the wheels. The problem gets worse with larger tires.

This is the way the powersteering is designed on the X's and SuperDuty's. I can't speak to the specifics, I was originally worried about it until I found out that this is was characteristic of the design.

You mentioned that yours seems to have gotten worse, but if it still functions normally at regular driving speeds, I would venture to say that maybe you're just noticing the slow-speed steering characteristics now? Maybe it's time to start lifting weights?

Hi
My 01 Excursion, use to be like that( 46k miles) I found that my ball joints were seized to a degree, replaced the joints with new moog joints with grease fittings and nice and easy to turn again.
I had been told that these ball joints don't wear out they just sieze up, generally between 35k and 60k miles.

Jay,
Welcome to the site.....

Good point! I've seen Ford miss oiling the front end on their quality care check ups.
