Lately, I have seen a huge decrease in gas mileage and can't figure out why. My engine is the 5.4L V8 and I added a K&N air intake and Gibson exhaust some time ago. Boy was life grand! I was getting anywhere between 14-16 mpg and on average saw as much as 275-325 on the "first" half tank of gas. This of course was only when I drove the truck like a grandma. When I added bigger tires, I lost some economy and was getting about 13 mpg. Now, in the last couple of weeks, I am getting about 10 or less and sometimes go just a little over 400 miles on a tank. I changed the K&N filter, I made sure the air pressure was correct (I am running Goodyear ATS 305/70-16) and took the truck in for the 30k service. They did replace the fuel filter but that did not seem to make any difference. It runs perfectly normal. I use the same filling station and pump as much as possible but decided to mix things up a bit and no matter what gas I use, the result is the same. I don' t remember having mileage this sh***y last winter. I know that they oxygenate gas in the winter to reduce emissions but I believe our state is requiring it year round. Anyone have any thoughts? Dirty injectors? Should I run some STP gas treatment through a tank or two? Is that safe for my engine? TIA and Happy Holidays everyone!

How is she running performance-wise? Still feel like it has the same power as before? I was maybe guessing that an O2 sensor in the exhaust went bad or maybe a catalytic converter is plugged...but you'd notice a difference in performance, and generally an O2 sensor will trip an error code on the computer.
What have the temps been like in your area in the last two weeks?

Are you the orignal owner of the truck?
Maybe your driving habits have changed now that you've "gotten used" to the truck...
That's typically what I do... drive around in a new one like it was gold...
then get used to it and drive it like I stole it...
(but thinking I'm driiving the same )
A 5.4 has to work pretty hard to move 8K+ lbs of Excursion.... Didn't know they put them in the Ex's... only thought they put them in the Expeditions...

It also could be our winter blend of gas here in Maryland, Scott. Is our gas still oxygenated.

Temps have been all over the place. Thirties to fifties. (Thats Maryland weather for ya) Stills feels like the same amount of power and it runs very well. I did notice that under harder acceleration I get a knocking noise so maybe just an octane issue. But I have been told to ALWAYS run regular unleaded and not super. I have had the truck since new and have put 38000 miles on it in the year I have owned it and I rarely drive it like I stole it......

I thought that could be the case but I don't remember if the state requires the blend year round now. BTW Scott, when are you going to Trick Trucks?

Would love to check out the new mods. Let me know what time and day you'll be down. BTW- I just bought a new house and live right off RT2 heading towards Edgewater, about 1/2 mile south of Harbour Center and Aris T. Allen Blvd. My buddy with the Powerstroke EX who posts to the forums as THETURK may be around too. His 7.3 is looking great with all the mods. Post or email me, I am around. Right now it's looking like it's about time for
