Ok

I am in the market for a truck. I have been looking at all kinds of vechicles (pickups mostly). My buddy has an Excursion 4x4 PSD. He loves his. I used to have a 97 F250 HD 4x4 with a PSD and loved it, sold it because of regular cab.

Now with a family, etc money is tighter, so I will have to finance longer.

I am thinking that maybe an Excursion, 4x4, with a PSD. Reasoning is the diesel will last a long time (200k I would hope) and get better gas mileage than a 5.4 or V10.

So does this sound like a reasonable purchase? I will only tow a small trailer for now, but plan on upgrading to maybe a 24 footer. I am a bigger guy with some back issues so the interior should be right up my alley/

How is insurance for you guys with Excursions?

Any advice for a possible new Excursion owner?

Thanks in advance.

My insurance on a 4Runner (2003) and the EX ,also 2003 , combined is 108.00 a month.
I think the EX by it self is about 60.00 of it. Have Geico and been with them 12 years so I guess I am getting a good deal.

Believe it or not, the Excursion is not expensive to insure. Mostly because there have not been as many claims percentage-wise as compared to ... let's say an Explorer ... which has had a much higher percentage of claims compared to number of vehicles insured. I know because I have both, and it costs me more to cover the 2000 2WD EB Explorer than it does my 2001 4WD Excursion Ltd. I pay about $120 per month for the Excursion, Explorer, GT40 replica, car trailer & motorcycle.

BTW .... welcome to the forum!

Rob,

The diesel will certainly get better mileage than the 5.4L V8 or the V10. 200,000 miles is a walk in the park for the 7.3L. I would expect at least 300,000 miles out of one without concern.

As discussed in other threads, the big thing you want to make sure if is that you aren't driving the diesel in short distances. I have a 70-mile round-trip commute each day, so I put on plenty of miles and the diesel runs for a long time before I shut it off. You want to have a commute that the diesel can get to full operating temperature in for optimal performance/results.

The diesel also has a 100,000-mile transferable warranty.

Regarding the interior...they're the same on all three Excursions, so it's really a matter of finding the trim package you want. I know the Limiteds have power adjustments, lumbar, and heated seats which may benefit your ailing back. Perhaps someone else can chime in on the features on the XLT.

Your biggest issue will be dealing with the handling characteristics to reduce the stress on your body while driving. By handling characteristics, I mean the following:

1.) Replacing OEM shocks with aftermarket shocks (Rancho, Bilstein, Edelbrock are a few brands that people like, there are others, too)

2.) Adding a rear anti-sway bar to prevent body roll

3.) LANDYOT radius rods to prevent white-knuckle driving syndrom. By preventing the axle wrap that these vehicles tend to be prone to, these will really help make the X a lot easier to handle and a comfort to drive. I just got back from a road trip and was amazed to find out how much less fatigued I was after several hours behind the wheel.

Hope this helps.
