Hey all,

My trans is slipping and its time to pop for a new one. I have 73k miles on it and noticed my trans temp hit 210 after driving around and letting it idle while i ran inside the ford parts counter. I had the superchips setting on tow safe and drove the sucker home where i de-proggramed it and let her sit for a while. While at stock settings, if i drive heavily around town the trans temp will hit 200 after an hour of skinny pedal fun.

Soo, too much friction and slipping is building up heat. I had the fluid powerflushed at ford at 68k miles and basically, yeah i need a new setup, this trans is slipping too much.

Im going to be upgrading my torque converter to something reputable like a hughes or something and was wondering while im in there is there anything else to consider?

Any input of insight is helpful. Thanks in advance

If the choice came between rebuilding a going bad/toasted 4R100 and buying a new one,I'd go for new personally.

Bob Riley at www.Dieselsite.com carries the Monsterbox and if anyone knows Bob like I do that's a top notch tranny

I see you're in the Phoenix area,I'd recommend upgrading the tranny cooler also.

The Tru Cool Max 4739 is probably the best cooler out there,I know too many PowerStroke owners that switched to the 4739 and love it which is also available from Dieselsite.

Good job BIll!!! I'll agree with the above post. We have links to the dieselstop also. I have installed Bob Rileys valve body and BOY what a differance. Temps are close to 20 degrees cooler and the shifting is like a sports car.....Quick and firm.....More gas harder shift

Thanks for the info. Im planning on swapping my trans out for a rebuilt unit and upgrading the torque converter. If i torch this new unit in 50k miles i will consider a monster box or something super beefy, but now its just not necessary.

I do plan on the cooler upgrade.

Is there any updates, or certain things i should look for in a rebuilt unit? Or pitfalls to avoid?

I can get a unit over the counter for 1050.00 then throw 350.00 on there for an upgraded converter and then fluid and a trans cooler and im under 1700.00. So, at half the cost of a monster box im thinking its a decent deal.

I'm more surprised that you cooked it at 73K already! I'm fully expecting 200K out of mine at a minimum before I need tranny work. I don't do a lot of hauling, but I would still expect more than 73K . Doesn't your warranty cover the truck up to 100K?

My trans went out at 87,000 miles. I had been running a chip from 5,000 miles until the tranny's death. The chip did not adjust pressure or anything with the trans, so it was running in its stock configuration. I don't tow either, lots of daily driving and highway miles.

I've got 45,000 miles on my rebuilt trans...no problems, yet.

Matt, I think you will set a world record if your Ford transmission lasts for 200,000 miles!

yeah 73k miles seemed premature, but im running 35" tires and the superchips programmer. And i drive it like its stolen.

Other than monster box is there any other trans i should look at?

I don't have a lot of experience with these transmissions and PSD's...but I had a '96 FI50 that I just sold with 198K and tranny was still strong. Sounds like I'm in for a rude awakening.
