Hello all. Say I'm trying to find out a little info. I'm looking at several different excursions. One has a 7.3 turbo and the other 6.0. Were can I find information that describes stock hp and torque levels for each engine and find out which one lends itself better to performance up grades. My thinking is the 6.0 is a better platform for upgrading power but then I've been told by other that the 7.3 in the engine of choice. appreciate any links to info and feed back from this forum.

Craig,
Welcome to the club!
I think it really depends on how "all out" you're looking to go. If you're the type of guy that will be satisfied with a chip, exhaust, and aftermarket air cleaner, then I would recommend a 2004+ Excursion with the 6.0L. 6.0's came out in late 2003 models but were problematic due to the engine being so new and not very well tested. I believe Ford has worked out most of the kinks, but that will only be because previous owners aware of the numerous problems visited the dealer on several occasions to get them all fixed. Gen-X, moderator and member of the club here will be able to chime in with any issues like this as he's got an '03 6.0L.
If you're wanting to go all out with aftermarket fuel injectors and the whole 9 yards, it would appear to me that the 7.3L is more the way to go. Been around a lot longer and so there's a bigger market for these types of a parts at this time.
http://www.dieselinnovations.com is a sponsor on this site and they've got an '02 SuperDuty F250 running an 11.74 ET @ 115.31 MPH with a modified 7.3L Powerstroke. You can also see their listing of afermarket parts is a much longer list for 7.3L's than 6.0's.
If you are seriously interested in Diesel performance and want to do more than a chip and exhaust, then I would recommend checking out http://www.alldieselmotorsports.com. A lot of guys from the DHRA (Diesel Hot Rod Association) hang out there as well as owners of various performance diesel shops. If you're looking for the most in diesel performance, Diesel Innovations would be the place to go. They are based out of Houston, so they may be close to you as well.
I believe horsepower/torque values were something along these lines. Please feel free to chime in if someone knows exact values:
2000 (7.3): 235 HP / 500 ft-lbs
2001 (7.3): 250 HP / 505 ft-lbs
2002 (7.3): 275 HP / 520 ft-lbs
2003 (7.3): 275 HP / 520 ft-lbs
2003 (6.0): unknown
2004 (6.0): unknown
2005 (6.0): 325 HP / 560 ft-lbs (from Ford's website)
Also, the 6.0L will get better fuel economy than the 7.3L. The 6.0 is significantly quieter, too.

From my limited research on the subject, there are far more products out there for the 7.3 than for the 6.0. Of course, as the 6.0 numbers increase, so will the performance mods. The other thing I've learned is to be careful of power upgrades. The engines can take it (up to the limits of thepowdered metal valves), but the weak link is the torque converter, followed closely by the transmission.
I've decided to wait until my tranny starts to go, so I can upgrade it and the torque converter, before I do anything crazy like propane injection and chipping. I tend to put a little over 33K miles a year on vehicles (at 42K now), so I figure I'll have to wait another year, or two.
Disclaimer: These are just the opinions I've formed from reading info on this site, and other sites. I'm no expert. |

Hey Droptopgt,
Welcome,
Both motors are great. You will be happy with either. Here is my fav. link for the 6.0L, it covers each model year of the 6.0L and the changes/ problems.

Personally, If I was in your shoes I 'd get the last model year of the Excursion....2005. The 2005 PSD has the kinks worked out and the engine is great., and the truck is awesome. |

Hey guys thanks for the welcome and the info. I've been checking out the resources and I'll tell you its a hard choice as both engines seem to be good. The 7.3 makes less power stock but seems to really wake up with improvements. And like you guys said there are a whole bunch of go fast goodies out there for the 7.3. My quest is to have a about a 500-600 hp X to play with. I don't know what the torque numbers will be but they should be monsterous
