I recently traded in my 2001 F250 SD crew cab for a 2001 X. The engine, 7.3L diesel, is the same, tranny, gearing etc. But, I find that there is a huge performance difference compared to my F250. I realize that the X weighs more, but it is hard to believe it would make such a dramatic difference in performance and exceleration. It seems as if the Turbo boost is just not there. With my old F250, when excelerating I could literally feel and hear the turbo (without downshifting), but with the X, it doesn't seem to have that same boost, and if I try to push it harder, it will just downshifts to try and get the power to the wheels. I've heard and read that if the turbo unit isn't working, you can definitely tell - IE, can't even get up to speed on the freeway, etc. I don't have that type of a problem. But, is it possible for the turbo to just not be working up to spec?? If I get the boost measured by a shop, is there a range it should be performing in? (I've checked the fuel filter/separater and it is fine (just recently changed). Any suggestions? Thanks. Paul |

Is your Excursion straight up bone stock?
If the turbo is not working you'd have plumes of smoke pouring from the tailpipe.
I suggest a performance air filter like an AFE stage 1 and a Walker Big Truck Muffler which is a straight thru design, you'll benefit much better acceleration, power and MPG's long as you don't daily run it at 80+ MPH.
I've got several Excursion friends in the bay area that I could get you in contact with to see some of the mods they've done for performance.
Typical turbo boost psi is 18-19 with the 7.3L engines.
Your F250 was abit quicker due to it was about 1,000 lbs lighter on average.

You should be able to hear the turbo on the Excursion, although it will be less pronounced from inside the cab as it was with your F250. The Excursion has sound deadening material (under the hood, firewall, dashboard) while the SuperDuty's do not.
If everything checks out with the engine, I would look into the transmission. Perhaps the torque converter is going or something is preventing full power from being transmitted to the rear wheels. How many miles are on the X? Has the tranny ever been rebuilt/serviced?

Bill & Eric,
Yes, my X is completely stock (as far as I know, as I am the 2nd owner). But, I see no aftermarket parts under the hood or chassis. Only 46k miles. Tranny seems fine from what I can tell in my regular daily driving. No info. of any service etc. I purchased it used from the same dealer that had originally sold it, so I am going to check with their service department.
I would love to get any contact info. you have for friends in out area, esp. any info. on good mechanics or shops for the diesel X's. Thanks again. |

well on diesels you also have a turbo bleeder valve, or a variable wast gate, when you let off the pedal you can hear the pushhhhht,, thats the valve letting the presure out of the turbo. this can be tuned to give you more or less lbs of boost, now when I bought a 86 thunderbird turbo coupe, it showed 26 psi of boost, way in the red, and the car was a dog, we took it to the shop and replace this part and dialed the new one back to 12 psi, and it rand like a raped ape. I would keep up with my buddys brand new 95 GT. this part being that its attatched to the tubo itself, it tends to get real hot and then cold, it can go at anytime. so I suggest that you find out how much boost you are getting and then look at that. also, on my 12.7 liter Detriot that I have a charge cooler, if that has a pin hole in it, your power is out the window, oh it will seem ok but your power will go away month by month, so check into that, that could be the rubber boots that conect the air pipes to the turbo or it could be in the grill area in the form of a rock chip.. hope I helped!!
It really is all about size!!!!!! |

Welcome Paul...
I'm late to the party, but have you considered a tuner for your diesel X. ?
both my 02 7.3 and 03 6-oh diesels COMPLETELY changed character once I got a tuner... More sports car responsive than truck slow !!!!
the 7.3 improved so much I HAD to get a rear sway bar on my 4x2 so I could carry all that extra speed around the corners
good luck !
JB
OH, I chose a tuner over a module or chip because I would rather change the software from the drivers seat than change parts under the hood
