Thanks everyone for your replys!
It is a 5.4 XLT 4x4 that I'm considering. I would prefer the V10 but the price is very attractive on the V8. I'll test drive the 5.4 V8 this weekend, but based on comments posted here, it sounds like I might be in for a disappointment unless I want to add some additional "modifications" (which I'm not opposed to as they seem reasonable cost wise).
I've also read that the 4x4 X is 80.4 inches tall (6'7") but was wondering if that was measured to the top of the roof , or to the top or the tie-down rails?? I was kinda hoping someone has actually parked in a 6'10" garage without issues. :-)

Wayne,
I just grabbed the tape measure and went out and measured the height of the X and my garage door tonight. "Wow Eric, how nice of you to brave the harsh temperatures during this time of year!" Au contraire! We have a heat wave and it's about 30 degrees outside which means a short and a t-shirt are all that's needed to venture out into the garage.
ANYWAY...here are the measurements:
Floor to top of the luggage rack: Approx. 80"
Floor to the tip of the antenna: 86"
Floor to the top of my garage door: 83" (approx 82" to the overhang)
My X is a 4x4, is at stock height, and has stock tires.
A 6'10" clearance shouldn't be a problem! Just tell the wife not to go baja-ing over the speed bumps!! You may need to invest in a shorter antenna to prevent her from hitting the overhangs in the parking garages.

just a quick note on the antennae, I use that to judge when I am getting close to low overhangs in case there is any question. I find it comes in handy to leave the antennae at stock. I to am at stock height with stock tires and 6'10" is not a problem

The parking garage at the hospital where my wife works is 7 feet. Like Kevgar, I use the antennae as a reference point there as well as drive through fast food joints. My excursions is at stock height with original tires and I have no problem. Just have to make sure the aftermarket roof rack is off.  We have had our excursion for about 2 years now and a very happy   In my opinion, it is the best family vehicle we have ever owned. Good Luck

When I used to have to go into the office parking garage (b4 telecommuting fulltime)
I could never get past ducking my head a little even though I KNEW it would clear by 2 or 3 inches under those HUGE concrete beams... I made me mad at myself in that I couldn't stop that 
But still went slow enough to ensure no BOUNCING allowed

Hahaha, my wife does that all the time! I like to speed up when going under the clearance signs to really scare her!

Hi John Boy!
I find myself doing the same thing whenever I go through garages. You feel like your going to hear
this ungodly scraping sound at anytime. You'd think they would desing those parking garages with a few more inches of headroom  . Look me up the next time you decide to head this way.

The parking garage I use in downtown Chicago is 7' - (84"). I too still duck (even though I have owned it for 3 weeks now  ). I have been able to "learn" somewhat though as I now drive 10 - 15 moh in the garage. And yes, my antenna does hit the pipes and signs (just the tip of it though)

I wanted to say thanks to all of you that have replied!!
I'll be going on a few test drives this weekend and will report back how they went. I admit that I'm now leaning towards a V10 vs. the V8 but will have a better idea which way to go after the weekend.
E.Long- Thanks for taking the time to go out and measure they height of your X. That was very helpful. I feel better that I can safetly enter the mall parking lot without too many worries.
Again, thanks for all the feedback, you guys have been very helpful to this "newbie"
