They are big!!! Other people don't realize it either and will go out of their way to make parking and maneuvering in a parking lot as difficult as possible. I can't tell you how many times people park inches away from each side of the X.

Can't wait to hear what kind of results you get from the tranny upgrade.

i am learning quickly about what you said about people boxing you in i am now driving the X every day and getting used to it.i took it to my golf course this mornig(about 25mi)and we have to pull a big grade on the freeway.the X took it in stride and wound up passing everything in sight.i guess this beast doesnt care if your pulling a grade or going off a cliff,it maintains its speed very well. i will pull this grade next week after the trans mods, should be much better.then after TTS does the engine mods it should fly.i can now concentrate on the X,sold the Cobra and Tundra.hey,i even bought new rubber floor mats yesterday, its a start

Update!
just got the trans apart, seems i have the defective direct drum with second gear diode which sucks.these units were recalled by Ford because they were blowing up in many models.they need to be replaced by the early style sprag unit(a one way locking clutch).also,it seems my torque converter is about to let loose(32000 miles).pan has a lot of metal and trans parts look good(magnet is loaded with metal)now mind you, this X has never towed much.

gearman,

Sounds like you need a couple more magnets. Problem solved!!

transmission is in the modifications we did are;Prolok converter from Suncoast.transmission stripped down for overhaul.we found no damage or wear in the trans, but we did find the defective 3rd clutch drum with diode(it was not bad but it is a potential problem)that was replaced with heavy duty sprag type unit.the new TransGo "tugger" shift kit was installed.i will be doing other internal mods to the trans at a later date.
driving impressions are great!the torque converter has a much better charge at take-off(charge=trans in gear, converter loaded under pressure by engine torque)which means it jumps off the line quicker(great for towing)mid range is much stronger and part throttle down shift(cruising at 35-40,give it three quarter throttle, trans downshifts,3 2 1)it really jumps and accelerates faster.the torque converter lock-up is now on and off(like the E4OD)instead of PWM (pulse width modulated, which means it slips on and off, great for comfort, bad for towing)you can feel the clutch come on now(i like that)the trans fluid going through the cooler has been increased by 200 percent because of the shift kit.ive only driven it 3 miles so i will post more after ive had it on the road.

regards mike

i want to add something to the above post.the torque converter in the E4OD and the 4R100 are the one weak link to this transmission.the trans has other problems that should be adressed, but the converter will fail you every time.most aftermarket converters are junk, worse than factory.the converter in these beasts is the same as a 71 mustang 302(with a clutch for mileage)so you guys figure it out.

thanks for listening, mike

Gearman,

I (as well as others, I'm sure) would appreciate your recommendations for quality aftermarket torque converters as some of us look for replacements now that our X's are getting higher miles on the odometer.

Suncoast is considered the best and thus is the most expensive. What about lower-priced units that maybe aren't up to the same standards as the Suncoast but are still a good bang for the buck?
