Ok, as I have been posting lately...my 7.3 strarted stalling under deceleration and idle conditions last mont. Prob did that about 5 times...would crank right back up.
Someone posted on here it sounded like a CPS cam position sensor...
As precaution to fuel contamiation possibility, I drained fuel filter bowl twice and also changed fuel filter.
Sat night coming back from hunting, i was driving in hard freezing rain at highway speed 70 mph and it keep stalling quickly ...the tach would drop about 500 rpms then immediately pick back up...did this about 10 times in 2 hours.
Didn't drive it yesterday..today drove it to work (less than 10 miles total)...ran fine. Cranked it to go to lunch and got 5 blocks down the street and it started loosing power to the extent that it wouldn't even move in drive. Parked it...kept checking to see if it would run...and it ran VERY rough...with some smoke...was not generating any power at all. After 15 minutes I tried it again and it cranked perfectly normal and ran fine 5 blocks back to my office...where I parked it and had it towed to a dealership.
Does this still sound like a CPS problem? I hope it coded so they can track this problem down, cause it is running perfectly fine now.
I value the input from this board more than what those CSRs say at the dealer.
Anyone???
Thx

The CPS when it has a problem it shuts down your engine cold turkey(no RPMs) but most have been able to restart, the part is roughly $85-100 and an easy change out,in the past on another 7.3L I had the failing CPS did cause a nasty drop in RPM and shook the bejesus out of the truck like it was running on every other cylinder.
Your symptoms could also be the Injector Control Pressure Sensor which is located right behind the alternator on the cylinder head.
Have you had a chance to swing by a Checker,Autozone, etc to see if they can put a code scanner on the truck for codes?

Doesn't sound like the same symptoms I had when my Cam Position Sensor died. My X just completely shut off. It would not restart. Naturally, when the dealer got around to looking at it, it died right away so they handed it back to me as if nothing was wrong. I promptly drove it, had it stall out again a couple miles from the dealership, and it wouldn't start.
I had to suggest to them that it was the Cam Position Sensor because it did not produce an error code for some reason. There was really no sputtering for me, the engine just completely shut down.
Will be curious to hear what the problem was. Keep us posted!

Here's another idea, if not the cam sensor then maybe the ECU (engine control unit) is taking on water. I had another Ford that cracked the ECUs outer shell and started to run rough in wet conditions. If the ECU is not giving you a code then maybe the ECU is having trouble. I would have the cam sensor and/or the ECU checked. If the ECU does not response to a code reader then the ECU is probably compromised.
Good luck.

Mustang,
I didn't go to Autozone to see if it pulled a code because once I got it back to my office I didn't want to run the chance of it breaking down on the road again - so I simply called AAA and had it towed.
I'm waiting to hear from the dealership this morning and I'm REALLY hoping she pulled a code!
Keep your fingers crossed for me.
Thx!

OK!
Just got a call from Ford dealer. It WAS the CPS - they are replacing and it is covered under warranty - didn't even have to fight him about that.
I guess the dealships know now that it IS covered.
Will be ready this afternoon, and by the way..it DID pull a code. I'm guessing it coded when it was running SO rough yesterday.
Thx ALL.
Hope this is the fix and she doesn't give any more trouble.
Thx

I guess the dealships know now that it IS covered. | Make sure the cashier knows its covered, too! When I had mine replaced under warranty, the service manager said it'd be covered, but their computer system said otherwise. They called Ford headquarters and verified that their books/computers had an error in them. The CPS is clearly part of the engine and thus falls under the 100K Powerstroke warranty.
At least it was an easy diagnosis. You'll be back on the road in no time!

At least it was an easy diagnosis. | I think the ratio of the CPS pitching a code is like 1 in 5,you got lucky and on the road again Kinda nice having the 100k warranty on the Powerstrokes, dunno if the gassers are covered with a similar warranty.

The cashier is showing it as a warranty item too, because when the service rep called me and told me it was ready, I made him give me an amount and an invoice number...and the numbers add up!
He also tried to up-sell me on fuel filter - said it needed one. I promply reminded him to verify things like that before stating it as fact...I CHANGED THE FUEL FILTER TWO WEEKS AGO.
Also said I needed back brakes and the front rotors machined (which is true).
Said the power lock on the passenger side wasn't working (which is true.) Very thorough look they gave my truck!
OH...he said I had a 'critter' nesting in the "V" of the engine (which WAS true). I dug out a totally toasted chimpmuck from there last weekend. I guess he hopped up there one cold night when I got home and slept-in the next morning and got toasted because he didn't bail out when the truck got hot on the way to work! ANYWAY - I pick up the truck at about 2 PM today and I SURE hope it was the CPS.
Thx all!
