First, hello one and all. New reader, member and, hopefully, soon to be owner. We have alway owned Fords, 4 Mustangs, 2 Pintos, 1 Fairlane 500,1Galaxie 500, 1 F-150, 1 Fiesta, 1 SHO and 1 Explorer. Here's my question. The 96 Explorer that we depend on now is reaching about 150,000 miles and is beginning to act it's age, niggling problems, nothing major at this point. But we think it is about time to consider a purchase of a different vehicle. I have found a 1 owner 2000 XLT, V-10, 2wheel drive, tow pkg., 6 CD player, upholstery interior, rear air w/83,000 miles. Super clean inside with a few dings outside. The price:$9800. So, what do you think?

P.S. One of the exterior blemishes was caused by one of the Firestone Steeltex tires that blew out. Weren't these supposed to be replaced by recall. And does anyone have long term experience with this tire (there are still four on the vehicle, all with good tread).

Welcome Bill,
First....The truck sounds good with a sweeet price. If you have a freind that is a mechanic I would get to give it a once over. The motor will last as long as taken care of. I know of NO problems with 2 wheel drive X's but more members will chime in with there knowledge. I wish you luck on your purchase and come on back after buying it.

Bill,

All these Texans joining the club...man! Welcome! Or should I say, "Welcome, ya'll!"

$9800 sounds like a steal to me!!! How long do you plan on owning it? While I don't have the V10, I have 133,000 miles on my 2000 Excursion and everything else is holding up just fine. A few rattles here and there but in surprisingly great shape for as much as I drive it. I hope to get 300,000+ out of her before having to consider another vehicle.

I'm not sure how many owners here have high miles on their V10s. 83,000 on a 2000 model year isn't too extreme, so if it checks out OK, I'd say go for it!

Regarding the tires. Yes, there was recall on the Steeltex's. Mine were replaced with BFG Rugged Trails. I like the Rugged Trails a lot better...little softer ride and much better in the snow.

Ford replaced my Steeltex's free-of-charge. I'm not sure when the replacement program ends, but you should ask the dealer that you are buying it from. It may have expired in fall of '04 though? As far as longetivity goes...the only issue I had with my Steeltex's was the sidewalls would get little cuts in them and would peel back. I ended up replacing all 4 at various points (replaced with Steeltex's). I managed to get 80,000 miles on one of the Steeltex's. Still enough tread left for another 10-20K.

9800 sounds like a good deal. I agree BIG TIME with Birdman. Get a once over, even if it costs $50 - $100. I saw a lot of nice cars when I worked at GoodYear that were all show and no go.

FYI, here's a pic of what happened to 3 out of 4 of my Steeltex's when I had them on my X:

Thanks to one and all for the responses. I drove it last night and it is way different from the Explorer, not bad, but definetly "truck-like". This vehicle looks almost like new inside. It appears that a lot of the miles were driver only as the passenger seat shows almost no wear at all, likewise, the back seat and the third seat. The suspension feels solid although there seems to be a little hop in the rear over larger pavement abberations. However, no rattles, no squeaks, no smoke, shifted out fine, steering was tight (almost too easy for a vehicle this size), all in all it appears to be in really good shape. My problem is that I live in East Texas and the Excursion is in Shreveport almost 1 1/2 hrs away and I don't know a single mechanic there. I don't do much in the way of maintenance the way I used to, but I do know some of the things to look for in a used/abused vehicle and I don't think this one presents too much risk. Heck, at this price, I might clean it up, put a for sale sign in it and make a little profit.

Thanks again,
Bill Morgan
