Hahaha, "pure poetry!" I had to laugh at that one, Andy.

Hello X'ers,

I bought the Craftsmen torque wrench and set my wheels to #165. Still no luck. Does the truck need to be on jack stands or anything? I tightened the wheels when cold. They seemed to be about #150. My driveway is on an incline if that matters. This started happening after I had my front pads replaced by Ford. They also "turned" my rotors at that time. Next time I'll get the PFC pads.

Any recommendations for rotors? Cost?

How many miles have you put on the wheels since you re-torqued em to 165lbs?

For rotor recommendation the general concensus is ART's,I look towards upgrading from the stock rotors to em myself and with the discount added makes it even better

Bucks Fan,

Sometimes you won't luck out by simply retorquing the lug nuts to spec. My factory rotors are badly warped right now, I think my dashboard pulsates 1-2 inches as I slow down from 50mph to 40mph. Outside of that range and the pulsating is minimal.

I would recommend ART's, as CHP mentioned. See my install article: http://www.fordexcursions.com/installs/install_1/index.php

One thing that you will still need to be sure of is to torque your new rotors to 165 ft-lbs. Even ARTs can warp if you don't have the lug nuts torqued to spec (mine did). I'm going to have Napa turn my ARTs, then I'll reinstall them and be back in business.

I'll chime in. I went through 3 complete sets of rotors within the 1st 50K. At recommendations of the list I put on some ARTs. The one set has lasted longer than all three OEs.

FYI: I use a Snap-on Torque I scored at Indy and a drop of oil or two on the lugs (not studs).

Nearly 70K on the arts. problem solved.

Hey guys,

I just found this board and I am psyched. I've got an '02 Excursion PSD with 155,000+ miles (yeah, I drive a lot.) I bought a spare set of front rotors which I "rotated out" with the original set while they were being turned. This was my routine every 10k-15k. The original front pads went about 120k before I had to replace them but the rotors were rediculous. I'm thinking of trying the ART rotors but have a question on torque.

I've always torqued my lugs to 155 in two stages. 100 first for all 8 then 155. An impact has never gotten near my truck when tightening - only to loosen. I'm reading here that 165 seems to be the magic number but I fail to see how 165 could be any different from 155 as far as warping as long as all 8 are equal in torque. Am I wrong or is that 10 lb-ft really going to make a world of difference.

Also, I've got an issue with my backup warning system. Every time I shift into reverse, the "OFF" light on the switch comes on and will not reset even when pushed as long as it is in reverse. It will reset when in any other gear but will turn off again as soon as reverse is selected. Can anyone diagnose that one for me? I stopped by my friendly FORD dealer and he said there were no service bulletins on the backup system... (yeah, right - I'm sure many others have had this same problem.)

My warping has returned after only 3,000 miles. I think it's primarily in the rear this time so I'm going to try 155 ft-lbs vs. 165 and see if that helps smooth it out. I'm also going to inspect the rear calipers to see if they are properly lubricated...maybe one is dragging and creating additional heat. If everything checks out, then I'm really at a loss for what the problem might be. Perhaps a brand new set of rotors will fair better than resurfaced rotors. I'll post as I find more details. Considering both OEM and ART rotors have warped more than once on my X, I think it's something other than a rotor issue.

If I read this correctly, you're saying that your reverse sensors never work as the button is always "off?" I haven't personally experienced any issues with my reverse sensors -- I would recommend posting a new topic so others will see it. It probably won't be seen buried in this brake rotor thread.
