I have a 2001 EX diesel. Just the other day i flipped the switch to 4x4 in the outo mode (hubs not turned manualy) and nothing happened. I hear the differential locking in but i have no 4x4. I can lock the hubs in manualy everything works well. I can go in and out of 4x4 using the switch on the dash, i just have the hubs locked in all the time.
The local Ford dealer said it is the seals in the hubs allowing air to escape and not locking in the hub. Does this make sense? Any help would be appreciated as i live in Alaska and we are still way into winter.

This is a very common problem with Ford automatic hubs. It can be caused either by a vacuum leak (as the dealer says) or more commonly by dirt and dust getting in there and increasing the friction so that the vacuum won't engage them. A common practice is to douse the hubs with WD-40. Use the forum search on 'hubs' and you will see several threads over the past year discussing this.

If I remember correctly, Ford will not replace just the seals, but rather the entire hub. If it comes to that, spend your money more wisely and buy a set of Warn hubs. They won't be automatic, but they will last forever.

gregp108, It's either one of two things:

1.) The vacuum line(s) could be brittle and causing a leak. See the below pic for the location. I had to trim the ends of my vacuum lines because they were all cracked. Yours may be, too.

2.) The yellow seals around the hub are bad and need replacing. Roughly a $3.00 part from Ford and a really easy fix.

Well, I stand corrected. I guess the seals are available from Ford. Thanks, Eric. And thanks for the photos.
