I picked up my new X a couple weeks ago. Some have said it will get quiter when it breaks in, but mine seems to have gotten louder than when I picked it up " valve clap etc.". Currently at 1,000 miles. Compared to other 6.0's it seems loud actually it seems to be as loud as some 7.4's I have heard. I thought the 6.0 was suppose to be much quiter. Any Ideas? |

Welcome to the board My first thought is you're getting air in the fuel system most likely from a loose fitting or alot of fuel wash in the tank resulting from fuel under 1/4 tank.
Cold weather isn't very friendly to Ford Powerstroke engines in general, they tend to be louder during the winter and the winter blend diesel doesn't help either.
There's modifications here and there that can be done to quiet it down some and gain power,MPG's at the same time. Bill

Thanks
The odd thing is that every once in a while it will suddenly get quite. This only last about 10 minutes. Could there be a problem with the PCM system?

Since the 6.0L came out in late 2003 Ford has had to re-flash this or that with them but it was truck by truck basis as one would have no isses and the other would.
You may want to check with your selling dealer to see if there is a better flash code for your Excursion as it may improve the engine noise levels,I know first hand from having 7.3L's that if it's not getting enough fuel it's alot noisier.

HI TH !!!
CHP knows of what he speaks !!!! no matter WHAT you may have heard ! some of the EARLY unflashed trucks DID have pilot injection which quieted the trucks down tremendously... but the PI is said to have caused other issues and they disabled it on the Oct 3 flash I THINK ? !!!
so it depends on what flash (software version) you have as far as "loudness"
I can tell you first hand though that the latest flash for the computers on the 6-oh DID do a MUCH better job for all things !!!
It improved my truck a bunch !

Thanks there Johnboy Yeah I been on a roll with 7.3L fuel mods lately and getting very familiar with what causes loud engine noise with the 7.3's but I'm sure some of it also relates to the 6.0L's
Man are we soaking in the 80's weather the last few days!

I now have 7,000 miles on my X and it is still extremely loud. When I bought it I was told it was going to be quiet as far as deisels go. Right now I am extremly disapointed. I heard a chevy super duty at Sam's last night and you could barely tell it was a deisel. Wish they put the DuraMax in a Suburban. Mine sounds like a Fed Ex truck half a block away. |

I must say that the 6.0L's I've heard are very quiet. Unfortunately I do not know enough about the 6.0's to be able to diagnose issues that would cause it to run louder than others.

TurkeyHunt | Turkey hunter - another thing you may "suggest" to your dealer is to check your EBP sensor...
Exhaust Back Pressure sensor issues has been known to cause the quiet, then loud, then quiet idle...
SOME have gotten around that by disconnecting the 5 wire plug on the very top of the moter which goes into the EGR module... doing this with the engine off leaves it closed at all times and is eliminating the idle changes, some say more power, some say less boost, but all agree a LOT less soot reintroduced into the intake....
