This may be the same as toytower's noise but here goes. My 01 4x2, V10 has developed a bit of a "thudding" noise in what sounds like the left front area. It is not the popping sound that you get with the body mounts and my shocks are only two months old... however it almost sounds like the noise you'd get from a loose shock---except you only hear it, mostly, turning a corner on an incline or a bump. I read about a front sway bar but they don't have one for a 4x2-correct--can't imagine how that could work,, Anyway any answers or speculations would be appreciated.
Thanks

Very well could be a shock loose, but jack up that side, (I know this sounds dumb) and re-torque the lugs. Something maybe loose up in there!! But also check the body mounts ect.....it wont hurt!!

If it occurs mostly while turning, I would first suspect a ball joint. Jack up one side and grab the wheel top and bottom. If you can wiggle it then you might need new ones. I recommend going with greaseable joints rather than the OEM joints.

I have 65K on the X. I tightened my lug nuts on the left front and I have not heard it since though you know better than to say anything like that around the truck.. That sounds like voodoo to me as I can't figure how it would create a noise that had multiple pops to it. One nut took some torque, the others were pretty tight though I could move them a little. What are those torque settings again??? I think I will have ball joints checked...isn't this a bit early for those to go out or?????
Thanks

65K is a bit premature for ball joints to go out, but anything's possible. You would most likely notice somewhat sloppy steering/handling. It's a quick check when you have a moment to jack up the front end and try wiggling the wheel top to bottom.
BTW, 165 ft-lbs for the torque on the lug nuts!

somewhere around here (maybe another ex-discussion board) I read a posting by a guy who had the same issue, and found it was a loose Sway Bar.
He found it by crawling under the car, and having his friends rock the truck back and forth (via the open doors, for more leverage). from under there he could trace the sound exactly. |
